Penny Ann's is one of my go-to B-fast spots in SLC!! They serve up some delicious stick to your ribs comfort food! If you're looking for a lite, granola, low-fat yogurt driven breakfast this isn't the spot for you! Come hungry and ready to EAT!! Their "heavenly" pancakes are very close to a heaven like experience. Idk what they put in the batter but the taste and consistency is one of a kind!! I definitely recommend this place!!

Horrible service, lack luster & bland omelets. Quiche came out 10 min after the rest of the table's food, check not split properly. No reason to ever go back.

Great friendly calm service. Always feel welcome and appreciated by everyone here. The Tomato Basil soup was a perfect blend of cream and tomatoes and spices. Quiche was really good. Always take pie home. Great lunch

Great food for a great price. I mainly go to Penny Ann's for the pancakes, they are sweet, buttery, and delicious. I ordered the big breakfast and let me tell you, it's big! I took more than half of it home. The only bad part about going to Penny Ann's is the wait..most days I have to wait around half an hour to an hour. The cafe itself is small so expect a wait on the food also...but boy is it worth the wait.

Visited on 07/03/15. The pancakes were off. Not as fluffy and delicious as every time before. Still good, but I hope this is not the new normal.

Looks like a small place but not. The waitresses were really wonderful and the breakfast was ok. Expected more than what I had.

After hearing all positive things about Penny Anns we decided to give it a try. We went on a late Saturday morning, it wasn't very busy and we were told to seat ourselves. We did. And then waited rather long for a waitress to get our order. After our food came out, our waitress walked by our table to help other tables, probably 10 times. We had empty drinks and thought she would see them on her many trips walking right past us. She didn't. She also never checked on us after she dropped the food off. We had empty drinks the whole time. The next time we saw her was when she was bringing our check to us. The food was average, but definitely not worth the bad service. Very disappointed.

Great food and service. It's located inside a somewhat scummy tenement building. Wanted to use the bathroom which was in the hallway of said tenement but I assume someone was shooting up in there because they never came out with the key. Still, would definitely return because the food was that good. A place as good as this may want to relocate to a better building.

If you've never been, you are missing out. I would never order or make pancakes but I come here knowing every menu item comes with heavenly hot cakes.

I'm not sure what all the raving reviews are for. I've had many a better breakfast than Penny Ann's Cafe. I ordered a ham and cheese omelet and it was just average. The potatoes were average as well. Now, for the good side of things; The service was quick and very friendly, and the pancakes that came with my omelet were quite delicious. If I were to go back, for some reason, I would just order the pancakes.

Penny Ann's is a great little diner spot in SLC with a lot of warm charm. I was in town for a few days on business this past week and stopped in for a fresh made legitimate breakfast (say no to free hotel breakfast). The staff was very warm, friendly, accommodating and pleasant first thing in the morning. The food was a affordable, fresh and delicious. I noticed a lot of locals that were regulars coming in and exchanging good mornings with one another. I even heard the waitress ask "the usual?" to one of them which I absolutely love. No need to look at the menu when they do what they do THAT good that the staff knows your order when you walk in. I will definitely be returning when I'm in town for work.

We've been here a bunch of times now and everything is always delicious. I'm not usually a pancake person, but their pancakes are superb. Light, fluffy and flavorful. They are simply delicious! The dishes are large so come hungry. I love the Utah omelet because you can build your own. The omelets are light and fluffy with lots of ingredients in them. Hashbrowns are crunchy and tasty. Also try their pies! Just had their coconut cream and it was spectacular! Service is great. If you are coming on Sat or Sun be prepared for a line.

After reading a few reviews stopped in on way to SLC airport after skiing Park City. Service was super friendly, all smiles. Cindy, our waitress, was lovely! 2 of us had breakfast and 2 had lunch. Everything was delicious! The Rueben was crazy good. Fresh rye bread and homemade corned beef. The heavenly hot cakes were exactly that...heavenly!!!! Can't wait to stop in again the next time we go skiing. Wish we had a family owned diner like this at home.

Great place for breakfast. Pancakes are amazing. Coffee was hot and never ending. Restraunt was small, staff made up for that. Great service. Recommend this place to all. Best little place in town.

I must like Penny Ann's Cafe, I've only been there 4X in the last month!!! The caramel pecan stuffed french is to die for. You must try their pies., especially the banana cream pie. If you want to try a good sandwich, the chicken salad ciabatta is DELISH!! This restaurant is always packed, I think they need to open up a couple more bays for more seating....it will only help them make more money!

The best pancakes in Salt Lake hands down. This place is so inexpensive to the point it almost feels unfair considering the quality of food. Between the pancakes, corned beef and hash or their amazing home-made pies, this is a must eat at place for everyone, local or tourist alike. Alas, Penny Ann's isn't the most vegan friendly of establishments (salads and hashbrowns are vegan friendly), but, they do have an array of vegetarian omelette and egg options to choose from.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place the staff is beyond friendly ! And the pancakes are to DIE FOR ! Worth the wait on Saturday/ Sunday ! Breakfast Nachos are tasty but you cant go wrong ordering anything ! I bring everybe I know here ! My friends that visited from Seattle crave PAC ! Once you try this place there's no other place for breakfast !

Great breakfast spot! The Heavenly Hot Cakes are truly heavenly. They come as a side with a lot of items, so just split and entree with hot cakes to share and it'll be the perfect amount. The Smothered Breakfast Burrito is tasty and making your own Utah omelet is a great option, too. The potatoes are just sliced, not like shredded hash browns... So it depends how you like them.

Best breakfast ever!!! I live in West Point and crave this place all the time!!!! It was so yummy!!! The food was great and the place was clean and staff friendly. It is very busy but worth the wait!

Fantastic! Friends suggested we meet there for brunch - and looking at the folks waiting outside in the drizzle/snizzle coming down for a table, it had to be good! Plenty of parking - both in back and on the street in front. Small, but worth the wait. The only SNAFU was getting our name on the list. I thought we were on - but the guy forgot to write us down. When he realized the error - we were next up. Good save! While we waited outside in the cold - the staff came out and brought us hot coffee... sweet! The server at our table was fantastic. Everyone at the table enjoyed their meal - Different versions of the "Utah Omelet" and one "Arizona Omelet" (Though the Jalapeno's were a little strong for his taste). I had the Chili Verde skillet. Fantastic - had to add just a touch of salt - unusual - but - I'd rather add salt that wish there was less (which happens all too frequently anymore...) As promised by our dining companions - the pancakes are the BEST EVER.... WOW. I would have been happy just with them. Home Run Penny's! I'll be back!

I was so excited to hear that Penny Anns opened in Draper! The south part of the valley needed a restaurant like this one! The food is just as delicious as the 18th Main Street location and just as busy! The breakfast scrambles are very hearty, none of us were able to finish our breakfasts. Love the yummy pancakes. So glad they opened closer to our home!!

Breakfast at Penny Ann's is a must! I would have to say it's at the top of my list for where to get breakfast in SLC!! I am a huge pancake fan and PAC gets it right with the Sour Cream Pancakes! Delicious!! Portions are large and prices are great for the quality and quantity of food. I rave to family and friends about the "Pot of Gold" breakfast. Servers and staff are always welcoming and friendly and Penny Ann's definitely has a lot of charm. I've only ever eaten breakfast here so I can't comment on the rest of their menu. Things to note: arrive early (8am) on weekends if you want to beat the crowds, if arriving later in the morning you can expect to wait for a bit for your table (but it's worth it).

  • Chantel S.

Had time to spare before my flight so came here with some family. The food is phenomenal! I had some waffles stuffed with bacon and they were delicious! Several people in my group had the Pot of Gold and that was a mouth full of flavor! Everything I tried here was delicious and the staff was so nice. I only wish the place was a bit bigger because there isn't a lot of seating and the wait can be a bit hefty.

  • Quinn N.

Hot pancakes live up to the hype - they are hot, soft and moist. I had corned beef harsh omelet, whose corned beef is house-made and thus, exceptionally tastes like beef. Fries are cut into semi circle slices, very deep fried which tastes like they were refried the third time or so. I give it 4 stars for overfried fries and 45 mins wait.

Penny Ann's Cafe is a hole in the wall restaurant off Main Street in Salt Lake City. We had Sunday brunch here a few weeks ago and it was very busy. Our server was friendly and we had a great meal. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and the eggs and bacon were very good and the whole sandwich was on a great, fresh roll. My wife had a great omelet. For desert we ordered a slice of delicious lemon raspberry pie, which was really good. The pie was kind of a cross between a cream pie and cheesecake. It was light and creamy, and tasty. Breakfast for two was also cheap! Only $20 for the whole meal. Will be coming back here again! Think I found a few favorite.

  • Rebecca S.

Amazing! The pancakes are to die for! I also have tried the penny pot potatoes and the pot of gold potatoes amazing. Yes this place is tiny but who cares when the food taste sooooo good? I will be back and am so excited they are opening a second location closer to home for me. Hooray! I will enjoy several meals there I am sure.

GO! It's Pie Day!!! Remember those days when every restaurant had patty melts, ruebens, awesome burgers, onion rings, and PIE? Pie in every shape, size, and flavor? Well, Penny Ann's is one of the few places left with that menu, and they do it right. I mean amazingly right! So, it's Pi Day and that is the real reason for my update to my previous review. I had lunch here and it is not too late for you to get your butt down there to celebrate this day properly! Get the Pecan, Raisin and Custard pie! Do it! You'll be glad you did. The key lime is good too. so is the Raspberry Cream and the apple crumble and the coconut cream and the...... GO! It's Pie Day!!! Oh and an entree and beverage come with a free slice of Pie today! OMG!!!

Penny Anne's is exceptional; their food proves that no-frills food can be absolutely delicious. After reading reviews from some of my friends, I was a little skeptical that Penny Anne's could live up to their 4.5+ rating, but the food surpassed my expectations and even the items that came along with my meal, which are usually an afterthought at many restaurants - think breakfast potatoes and free pancakes - we're among the best I've ever had (yes, really, ever). The service was also great. Our server was appropriately attentive, friendly, and really knowledgable about the menu. I see how the layout can be confusing for people, but there was very little wait today and my party was promptly greeted and added to the wait list. Eat here!

I love this place. Even the side salad was delicious, it had black olives and onion too. But the Philly cheese steak was awesome.

  • Barbara M.

The five stars confuse me on this place. This is a perfectly acceptable greasy spoon with average service. I have to admit, the pancakes are better than most breakfast places. If I go again, I will stick with those and call it good. It didn't help that today I sat at the counter so I was all too aware of the disorganized kitchen and disinterested servers. My husband got the pot of gold, which he liked just fine while I had a cheese and bacon omelet with potatoes so overcooked, I am surprised the kitchen thought they were servable. PAC is just so terribly average, don't go expecting amazing.

I liked my food enough, I like quality over quantity. Maybe this is my fault but I filled up on pancakes and couldn't eat my food.

I am not sure which is better: the awesome breakfast or the wonderful service. The pancakes are out of the world, but be warned, they are huge! Worth a trip!

This is a tough place to review. The quality of the food is very good, however the way they prepare their dishes can be plain and dry: add some hot sauce, pepper, gravy and you will be alright! The set up is pretty cool and the patio is nice. It would have been nice to have someone either seat us or tell us it's open seating when we arrived. Service way okay.

Arrived at Monday around 12. The inside was a tad crowded so my group (party of seven) ate outside. The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. I ordered a Reuben, a small fries, and a slice of coconut cream pie. The order took a bit longer than most to arrive because they made all of our dishes come out of the kitchen at the same time, but it looked like smaller parties had received their orders much faster. The Reuben was excellent; it was a great balance of all the ingredients. Fries were above average yet not incredible, but the thousand island dressing on the side was a nice touch. The pie's flavor was great (if you like coconut like I do) although it was a tad sweet. I didn't like the pie crust though. Another plus was definitely the yelp check in deal. If I wasn't here only for travels, could definitely see myself returning. Their low prices and good food make a great combination.

OMG! I have eaten at Penny Ann's Cafe twice and have love every bite! The Heavenly Pancakes are truly manna from Heaven! The most fluffy, scrumptious pancakes I have ever had, by far. I usually don't like pancakes or, at least, they are not what I get for a meal. If they come with the meal, that's fine, but I would never just order a stack of pancakes...until now! I really can't say enough about Penny Ann's pancakes and you really need to go for yourself. Tasting is believing in this case. The first time I went I got the Pot of Gold- a yummy scramble consisting of 2 eggs (any style), ham, bacon, sausage, home fries, onions, peppers, and mushrooms (if I remember correctly) all covered in country gravy and cheese! What more could someone ask for? The only bad thing is their limited hours. They are only open until 3 on Monday thru Saturday and until 2 on Sunday. Also, there is usually a pretty long wait, so don't wait until you're starving to go. Both times we went, the wait was about an hour. But, both times have been well worth the wait. Go to Penny Ann's Cafe for brunch and take some friends! You won't regret it...

My husband and I ate here this morning and it was excellent. I got pancakes and they were beyond wonderful, I ordered them with whipped cream and candied pecans and I couldn't believe how good they were. The whipped cream is a real whipped cream and sweet. We are truck drivers and go all over the country and try and taste the local food where ever we are at, sometimes not so good, but this place was excellent. We will be back!!

A friend took us here for breakfast. It was delicious! I had the Penny Pot Potatoes and my only complaint was that my personal preference is smaller chunks of hash browns in a "scramble". I tried the pancakes that came with our friend's order and they were delicious! Next time I'll choose pancakes over toast. We selected a booth in the back room for privacy so we could visit but soon discovered that we had to practically yell over the music speakers above us. I missed half the conversation but there was no where to move by the time we discovered our mistake. Overall, I liked it. I give it 4 stars because I live not too far from the Holy Grail of Breakfasts - the Maltby Cafe and nothing can ever live up to their greatness. Penny Ann's comes pretty close, though.

This diner has been on my radar for some time and finally hit it up for an early weekday lunch. My chicken parm sandwich was pretty under whelming , skimmped on cheese and was dry. Had to double up on marinara to get it down the hatch. Breakfast items seemed a little better but nothing to write home about. For the price point its a decent choice but with so many more quality options not really much of a reason to return.

Hadn't had the pancakes until today. They absolutely did not disappoint. Perfect combination of substance and fluffiness. I think they might just be the best pancakes I've had from a breakfast joint. Well done Penny Ann's. Well done.

After numerous visits, I've tried a bunch of items on the menu, and I've yet to be let down by any of them. The onion rings are perfect, and their reuben is one of those meals I find myself craving on a regular basis. Their pasta dishes are solid, salads are great, and their breakfast is outstanding (get the hotcakes!). This place is family-run, and I love it. They remember my name and Penny makes sure to stop by and chat with me. Makes me feel like I'm home. I'm not able to make it here as often as I'd like since they only do breakfast and lunch now, but it's a real treat to eat at Penny Ann's.

I could not say enough about this place so ill keep to the basics and you ask or more specifics if u choose. The service is fabulous. Please keep in mind this is an intimate place. Packs a lot of people so space is tight but they work it well. Food is hot fresh homemade and satisfying. Pride and love are everyday ingredients. Coffee is never gone. Family run, resemblance is strong. Only been open under 3 years and its already a local fav. Restaurant is attached to an apartment building yellow in color.

We go out of our way to go here. There pancakes are to my liking. The atmosphere is cozy and it's always bustling. The baked goods are to die for. My fave is the seasonal watermelon cake. But the rest are heavenly too. The sandwiches and soup are always as we expect them - perfect every time. We don't go every day or week, but when we do go they remember us. That makes us feel welcome. We are looking forward to trying their new location in Draper.

Don't beleive the hype! PAC was a major disappointment. As a pancake connoisseur, I was advised this place was a "must go". This is one time that friends/YELPERS let me down. For starters, location, location, location! I'm all about hitting an old dive or hole in the wall, if the food is off the hook...this was an exception. This is a scetchy part of town and PAC's only restroom (unisex) is shared with the apartment building above (no, thanks). Now let's talk food. I ordered the breakfast nachos (took 40 minutes to get our food) with their famous pancakes. My other half, ordered their cornbeef hash (it was ok, but nothing to write home about). The breakfast nachos could have been amazing, but the chips were greasy and the egg (that was ordered scrambled), was served over easy. The chili verde in the nachos had good flavor, but was watery and overpowered by the invasive egg yolk. As for the item (pancakes) that I had so patiently waited to try for months, ehh, they were just "ok". My experience was lack lustre, at best! I'll pass next time. However, the people watching made for some great conversation.

  • Victoria K.

I LOVE Penny Ann's!! Whether it's for breakfast or lunch, this place is great! I think the best thing that they could have done was to add the chile verde specials to the menu permanently! My favorite thing for breakfast now is the Breakfast Nachos... A MUST HAVE!! Service is friendly and helpful. Penny and her crew are the best! If you're wanting to go for breakfast on a weekend plan to wait. The cafe is small and everyone wants a taste. It's well worth the wait though.

  • Liz W.

I'm always on the lookout for good service. I can cook at home so I like to be waited on. The staff at PAC was exceptional. It wasn't one server per table and that's that. Everyone who walked by checked in, refilled coffee, brought water etc. on top of the the pork verde was fabulous. Definitely don't need the toast if hot cakes that come with it. It's huge. Thanks y'all!

We went here on Saturday for brunch; even though we had a huge group and we couldn't all sit together the staff went out of their way to accommodate us; they even sent us home with a free pie to make up for it! The food was amazing! Everything is made from starch and made to order. Our favorites were the pancakes, banana/Nutella French toast and the California omelet.

  • April F.

(August 2013) Ok ok I KNOW! People love this place...I just...don't. I've been here a few times for breakfast. And it's always seems to be crowed. There are two entries but they lead DIRECTLY into the dinning area. There is no "waiting area" except for OUTSIDE the door (if that even counts). Sometimes the busy waiters/waitresses will pass right by you several times before someone greets you and ask's "how many"?. The wait to be seated has never really been that long; however the wait for your food is. (She) raves about their pancakes, and loves this place. I've tried them I believe three times and each time I have not been a fan. They taste waaaaay too eggy. I have tried an omelette from here but I'm not a fan of that either. Seems like they cook the omelette contents separately then just fold it up in some eggs. Hard to explain (because I'm still not sure myself) but I wasn't a fan of that either. I also hear about the infamous Lemon Raspberry cream pie, they sell out fast, I've been here a few times just to give it a try and finally on a whim one day was able to snatch up the last piece. I wasn't impressed. It wasn't bad, but definitely not ever going out of my way to get it again. Well probably won't order it ever again anyways. Guess it's just not for me. This place is small and very cramped, service is slow and the food isn't good enough for me to extend my patience and time just to come here. **UPDATE 2 Months Later (Oct 2013)**** Dropping from two stars to ONE. I really wanted to like this place but I just can't. I came in here because she (really) likes this place... She's paying so she picked. I figured I would try something else and maybe it will be so delicious it will make me change my mind about this place. So I ordered the "Penny Pot Potatoes" I of course went with the toast on the side instead of their gross pancakes. Which was a great choice. They make good toast!! We timed how long it took to get our food and it was exactly 29 mins from the time we placed our orders. (That's a long time people, even if it is busy) and yes the servers were super nice; but, you kinda have to be when the food takes THAT long to come out. The potatoes came with ham, bacon, mushrooms, & green peppers topped with cheese then eggs. *Sigh* it wasn't good. It was dry. The bacon pieces we too small to pick up with a fork and over cooked. Way too crispy. The other meat was fine. The mushrooms were cut too thick, as well as the potatoes. Oh and no seasoning. I had to drowned my food in Tabasco sauce. We sat at the counter/bar this time; which unfortunately gave us an up close view of the kitchen and how they make drinks and food. I saw them make hot chocolate from a powder packet and hot water YUCK! They put whip cream on top to make it look pretty. I also saw that they poured OJ from jugs of Tropicana. You know the ones you buy at the grocery store for $3.89....but here they serve the same OJ for $2.99 a glass Whoa! And I'm pretty sure they serve tap water too. I might add I took a slice of Pumpkin pie home and it was good. But I don't trust this place. If you don't even make your own Hot Coco, or OJ, I can't trust you make your own homemade pies. I'm sure some sweet old lady around the corner makes the pies for them. *Sigh* Yet again I wanted to give it a chance, and yet again they fall short. I find way better breakfast in the SLC area for the same price and with better service. I'm never coming back.

What a gem!!! We ended up sitting at the bar and chatted with penny, her dad and other employees like we were regulars. Lots of good conversations, great fun and then to top it off, amazing breakfast. I had the 2 egg breakfast with the pancakes. BEST PANCAKES EVER. I can't wait to go back the potatoes were delicious. the overall meal, experience, people makes this place a new favorite and must have to bring friends to experience. If you arrive and you have to wait, it's worth it!!

Great place to stop from the airport on the way to Park City...it is just a few blocks off the freeway. This is the quintessential comfort food place. I can't believe how nice everyone was there!!! The service was excellent, and they had a very comprehensive diner/cafe menu. I had the patty melt and sweet potato fries. They make a big deal about their pies. They do have a wide selection of options. I can't say that any of them blew me away. We tried the coconut cream, apple crumble, and peanut butter chocolate. They were all good but not outstanding. All in all, a very good lunch spot.

I really enjoyed the food at this location, it was correctly prepared and the wait staff did a fantastic job. We went on a Saturday morning, and so did everyone else. We waited about 45 minutes for a table which was understandable considering the amount of people there, however the staff running the waitlist seems confused and or disorganized about his job responsibilities I think a 30 minute wait would have been achievable with a properly trained host.

We can't get over their pancakes, so so delicious. The wait on the weekends can be really extreme but we have never been disappointed with the quality of their food. But if you go on a weekday, there's probably no wait at all!

Great food and service. Seating is very limited and there is usually a wait so plan ahead. The scones are worth trying as they are one of the best scones locally

OH MY GOD. This was one of the very best breakfasts I've ever eaten, hands down. The amount of food I ate was shameful. Fortunately it was just one friend and myself; the place was packed, and parking was not fun. I would still fight the crowds for the chile verde skillet and Heavenly Cakes again... Holy YUM!

I have been here quite a few times. The pancakes are definitely something you will want to order. I typically hate pancakes but these are really moist and flavorful. I'm always torn about coming here though. I love the food but the same cannot be said about the service. When you walk in there is not room for a sign telling you to either wait to be seated or go up to the counter. After all this time I still don't know what they want you to do. Every single time the waitresses look up at you and don't say a word. They just keep walking past you without acknowledging you at all. Eventually someone does walk up and take names after people start to pile up. It's just a poor setup. Throughout the meal the waitresses are never rude but only a couple are actually friendly. So, overall I think everyone should try this place, but don't expect the service to wow you.

I was really excited to eat here today. Both my girlie and I had the half sandwich and soup. She had the Caesar and turkey sandwich. I had the garden salad and chicken salad. Her salad was OK, but the sandwich was minced turkey breast with a piece of romaine on a soft, white bread. She cut the huge rib out of her romaine and used the rest of my honey mustard salad dressing for flavor and moisture. My garden salad was mostly bitter, yellow, inner romaine leaves and croutons, with tomatoes, carrot, red onions and olives. Nothing had any appealing taste. The chicken salad was yellow, suggesting curry, but I couldn't tell. The cranberries popped, but that white bread wasn't worth eating. The place was loud and hopping, and the service was good enough. We plan to return next week and try the patty melt. Hopefully it will draw us back. Today, I could have done better at home for less.

Penny Ann's is great. Good food at a reasonable price. The staff is very friendly and attentive. There are lots of good selections for both breakfast and lunch. Always get hot cakes with your breakfast as they are fantastic. Soup is a good addition with lunch as it is homemade.

Great Pancakes! Good service. I would recommend this place for sure. Good atmosphere and good prices.

I initially didn't know what this place was known for. The menu is pretty standard for a breakfast joint. I'd say most of the items are nothing really spectacular. The only thing of note, are their hot cakes. Do order those. They are great.

Really wanted to like it. CRAZY busy. Had to wait about an hour. The pancakes were good, not amazing. I kept wondering why I waited an hour for a pancake.

This place is delicious, we were helped by summer! She was incredible. Made sure we had what we need. We had the biscuits and gravy and their breakfast nachos! The nachos were delicious! This was our first time and we loved it. They're very busy and we did have to wait. But definitely worth it. We will definitely return (:

The absolute best corned beef hash I've ever had! Homemade, light on the potatoes and heavy on the meat! Absolutely delicious!! And the waffles...light, with just enough crisp. EXACTLY the way I like. If ever in Salt Lake City again, count me in for breakfast at PAC!!!!

  • Trent B.

Great hotcakes and service. It is always packed, but there is airways great service and the food is really good no matter what you get. I would suggest the corn beef hash. They only have one bathroom you need a key for and it's usually ok unless a lot of people need to use it at once.

  • Ngan P.

5 Star for the Hotcakes alone, but 4 Stars for the overall atmosphere and location. I feel like there isn't a lot of variety to their menu selection and the early close time is definitely a bummer. The servers are extremely nice and easy going, I have to say Penny and her mom are just absolute dolls. Biggest tip is go early or expect a long wait, I really don't like the location mainly because the bathroom is such an inconvenience. I love the corned beef hash plate, but you don't really get fulfilled from it, I guess that is where the amazing hot cakes come in, a few bites of those hot cakes and you will be extending the button on your jeans (or you can cheat and come in sweats like me). I would recommend spending the extra $2.99 and getting the vermont syrup that comes in a cute size, because their regular syrup is just so sweet I can feel the cavities forming as I speak. Their sausage is also one of the fattest/greasiest I've ever eaten, but I think most people prefer that, however for me it was just a bit too much. Don't get the orange juice because it is not fresh squeezed, it's tropicana and not worth it! I hope this place never closes down because the hot cakes are amazing, but everything else is just ok.

  • Melanie M.

Very much dig Penny Ann's... it is incredibly busy on the weekends, so in order to beat the hungover crowd and the church crowd I suggest going either really early (7am-ish) or prior to closing. I am a huge breakfast fan, I could eat breakfast for every meal of the day, so this place is a dream, with enough variety to keep me happy. The sourdough pancakes are one of a kind & the pot o' gold is probably one of the most filling things on a menu in Salt Lake City. Everything about Penny Ann's is simple and fresh... its not about lavish, over the top breakfast. It is home cooked goodness in your tummy.

PAC was recommended by our hotels front desk staff. We decided to try it out and we are glad we did. My mother got the breakfast bowl, wife got the pecan caramel French toast (?), and I went with the smothered burrito. All three were amazing and we will definitely make trips back in the future!

I defy anyone to come up with a tastier, more melt-in-your-mouth pancake than those at Penny Ann's. This place, imho, has all the elements of the perfect not-so-greasy spoon, not-so-holey hole-in-the-wall cafe. Servers are fast, friendly and coffee-attentive. The food is wonderfully prepared. When the only complaint is the rare coffee temperature problem, I'd say they're doing pretty well. What's not to like about flawless omelettes, pancakes and pies? The only time I chose another place for breakfast was when I was out of town or due to an act of God, like when they flooded. I went to Original Pancake House that day and you'd think with "pancake" in the name, theirs would hold a candle to P.A.C., but it's not even close. Do yourselves a favor. Treat yourself to a Penny Ann's meal sometime.

Started with waiting time, which I understand it worth if the overall experience is making up for it. I naively thought they would have at least waiting area, where you can sit or stand at least not in the middle of dining area. There is no garbage container nowhere in the customer area, when I wanted to throw away a wrapper. After we got sitted, service was fairly prompt, waiter was attentive to our needs. As far as "heavenly cakes" I would think twice. Nothing special. But what got me is they serve them with piece of margarine/butter mix. I find it discussting. So I asked if I can get just butter please, but they DO NOT HAVE BUTTER. Maybe I just not getting traditional American food. probably it is wrong of me to expect healthy, but not fancy, pretty traditional peace of butter. And the one single bathroom, for the packed over 50-60 people dining at one time, does not seem normal and up to code. We are not going back.

  • Brittany M.

The wait is well worth it! Being a person who is immediately turned off by a 45 minute wait, my suggestion is to just tough out the wait! I didn't want to lose my chance to use a Groupon I purchased for the place, and decided to tough out the wait and did not regret it one bit. Pot O' Gold (Like a garbage hash, covered in GRAVY (Oh Baby) and the hotcakes (Melt in your mouth goodness) hit the spot and like a school girl in pigtails I am obsessed.

I found this listed on a "10 Places to Try in SLC" a few weeks ago. Having been to quite a few of the big deal restaurants around Salt Lake, I was dubious that this was actually a must visit eatery. Sure enough, when I got there, multiple signs were displaying awards Penny Ann's has won over the years. The food was cheap, with massive portions, and great service. We went at peak Saturday brunch time but the wait was still only 25 minutes. I will say the pancakes were not better than the Original Pancake House in Sugarhouse, but everything else was still delicious.

Penny Ann's is my favorite breakfast place. Let me go over what I have had there: Pork Chili Verde Skillet: The home fried potatoes are MONSTER SIZED. Not those puny potato pellets you get elsewhere. Add in the Pork Chili Verde and you have a great tasting dish. Top it with some Cholula hot sauce and enjoy! Pot of Gold: Plenty of everything topped with Penny Ann's fantastic sausage gravy. The gravy is thick and has a wonderful flavor. Breakfast Bowl: The Pot of Gold's little brother. Moreover, by little I mean the word has nothing to do with the portion or the taste. "HEAVENLY HOT CAKES" Skip the toast. Toast you can get at home. The Heavenly Hot Cakes are the BOMB! Not an after-thought item like at lesser breakfast places you have been to. These Heavenly Hot Cakes live up to their name in every way. Do not miss the Hot Cakes. Pies: Take a slice home. You will thank me later. A word about Service: It has been my privilege to have Penny Ann herself be my server. She has never steered me wrong on any item and she is quick and attentive. The rest of her crew is well trained and attentive, too. From the front to the back of the house, everyone works hard and I have never been disappointed. Do not let the size of this restaurant bring you down. What is coming out of the kitchen is huge. Have you found the crowds daunting? Get here at the crack of 7:00 am. It is worth the effort. Can't wake everyone up? You snooze, you lose. Simple as that. In conclusion, Penny Ann's Café is my number one breakfast spot in Salt Lake. Period.

I got the corned beef hash and pancakes. They were really good. Cute atmosphere and good service all around. I would probably return of in the area again. We ate here on our way back home after a weekend trip in the area. My husband thought his verde meal was average.

  • Cris A.

Don't get me wrong, the food is delicious, especially the pancakes, but waiting for a table at this place is ridiculous! Yeah, I understand that it's a small café and people always want to stay at their table and talk about stuff, but seriously, it would be polite to limit that time so that others can enjoy the place too. Once you have a table it's another long wait for the food, usually 45 mins and sometimes an hour. I wouldn't come here if the food wasn't amazing, so I guess it's worth the wait. But if you plan on checking it out for the first time, make sure you schedule yourself accordingly. Try the breakfast bowls! They will for sure fill you up, but don't neglect the pancakes either!

So I went with the family for breakfast and was blown away! I read the reviews and knew I wanted to try it out. When we got there it was a small quaint cafe, like a locals hangout. Our server was a sweetheart and helped us choose great options. Keeping to my New Year's dietI had the smothered burrito...it was so worth it. I love it when you have a cheat and it lives up to your decadent dreams! Pancakes are super fresh and yummy! Try this place out it is worth the wait.

  • Tiffany W.

Ok so the pancakes are the best I have ever had! I don't normally like pancakes, but, these are amazing! They do scrambled eggs right, not greasy or under cooked :) yay! Got the French toast too, it's ok but I would totally opt for the pancakes! On the down side the potatoes look better than they taste, they need some kind of signature seasoning, or even a non fried option. The omelet we got was a little on the greasy side:( and the coffee is ok, if you like medium bold.

I finally hit the "golden window" and managed to make it in for breakfast (weekends only!) today, though before I get to the food part, it is worth noting that a couple themes from my previous review had still not changed notably. The first of these is the mix of Coke Zero. It is off. Still. 3 months removed. Next is the service. Again, friendly, but a few minor miscues and this time it was notably slower (though given how packed this place is, that's to be somewhat expected), basically borderline excessive. The final one is the absentee-ism of the flavors in some of the dishes. I noticed the bill came with a comment card and I was messaged by the owner after my previous review, yet it calls to mind why bother with cards when there was some fairly direct observations of areas in need of improvement in my last review, yet none of those was measurably improved. I will say that the things they did well before, they are doing well now. Visually, everything looked pretty good, at our table and everyone else's, except the corned beef hash plate that I ordered, which looked lonely on too large of a plate. However, I finally found a place that can skillfully and correctly cook an over-easy egg. Everything, in fact, was cooked to perfection, so whoever is in the kitchen is aces. The fried scone was also excellent, probably my favorite thing overall. The bacon was solid, but unspectacular, though again cooked pretty well. My wife was really impressed by her bowl of oatmeal and that it didn't solidify into a glue, which is again probably due to the immense skill of the kitchen staff. Pancakes were over-driven by hype, in my view. Are they good, even very good? Yes. Are they the best I've had? No. Best in the city? I think if I was pressed, as much as some people refuse to accept that chains can rival local places, I'd give the nod to Original Pancake House or to Lazy Day, if they were having a good day. Eating the biscuits and gravy and corned beef hash (both here, like the bacon, mostly solid, though probably not much above average, honestly), I found myself being irritated again by Lazy Day, as both of those menu items are done much better by Lazy Day (especially the corned beef hash), when they're on. That they have been off so much lately is a great and grating source of annoyance to me. My issues with other restaurants aside, I've been here twice and wanted to love it both times, but nothing really has really risen above and stood out, except the fried scone. Price is very reasonable, given the food on the plate, which is also a plus, but flavor continues to plague nearly everything I've ordered, all the way down to the drink. Again. The extra star is for the kitchen staff and recognition of them doing a great job, in fact, not the food. I won't say I wouldn't go again, but given the fact that I've been underwhelmed both visits, I don't imagine I'll be fighting the crowds to try to get into here again.

  • Jack B.

We went back and the service was a lot faster this time. I still can't give them a five star review though because they don't accept Bitcoins. But the food is delicious and high quality. The waitress checked on us often. And the amount of food you get for the price is outstanding.

First of all, their pie really is excellent. We had a cherry pie - the topping was kind of a crumble. Anyway, it was great. Everything else? It was "A-OK", to use Yelp's verbiage. The pancakes were quite good, as advertised. My egg dish was fine. Interesting ambience...kind of retirement home chic. Definitely worth a trip, if only for the pancakes and pie.

Average at best. People raved about this, but it was just ok. I think maybe my expectations where to high given that I'm from the east coast. This place may be amazing by SLC standards, but not by ours.

I just sat outside in the cold for an hour an a half for table after table to be seated before me. Usually the wait is worth it, but today my family left very disappointed. I believe it's the new staff the doesn't care about returning customers. So sad to write this review today.

If the saying "never trust a skinny chef" is true - these big boys are trust worthy! And you can Trust me when I say don't wear your skinny jeans here. Go with something loose and blousey so you can gobble up some buttermilk pie after your meal.

Love this place for breakfast. Our waitress, Rachel, was fabulous. So pleasant, even cheerful, for it being 7am! Kept the coffee cup full of good, hot coffee. Heavenly hot cakes are truly that. Nice to get poached eggs, strange some breakfast places won't cook them. We would highly recommend this cute place and we will be back!

I'm not a morning person... Mornings are for sadists. Penny Ann's is the only valid reason to be awake on a weekend morning before noon. I am now a self proclaimed Hotcake Elitist. I cannot, and will not eat hotcakes anywhere but Pennys. They are perfect. And the biscuits and gravy... I am willing to wake up at 9am on a Saturday for them. Enough said. Get yourself some pie, any pie they are all amazing. It can serve as your just reward for getting out of bed.

don't come here...seriously, we found a great breakfast spot, don't ruin it for us by making us wait for an hour next time! we came at 1230 and got a table right away. great service!! all of the wait staff was super friendly and helpful (other servers helped clean off our table and deliver food when our server was tied up). Our server Rachel was great offering suggestions and checking on us throughout our meal. when there was an issue with how our food came out due to a new computer system being installed, she immediately rectified the situation and our food came out fixed within 2mins and she gave us a complimentary real Vermont maple syrup (normally $2) to make up for the error. our advice...pay for it when u order it is delish! and you get to take the bottle home with you (it's not a rinky dink side of syrup like other places). As for the food...no wonder they won best of state! I ordered a simple two egg breakfast with potatoes and a MUST...their famous hot cakes. I wanted to sample a lil of everything and it was all good. But the hot cakes are amazing. full of flavor, light and fluffy. unlike anything I have ever had before. add the real maple syrup...YUMMM. My boyfriend ordered the french toast sandwich with eggs over easy...if you are willing to get your hands dirty this is the way to go...hands down the best breakfast sandwich he has had in a long time. he dipped the sandwich in the maple syrup and was in heaven. overall a great dining experience and we will be back for sure! Quaint setup with an old fashioned diner counter, great staff, great food. winner all around. we need to come back and try their pies...I was salivating just reading the menu!

We have been to Penny Ann's many times and always enjoyed the experience. Today was absolutely horrible. People who came after us had ordered, eaten, and left and we will still waiting for our food. The waitress was rude when taking our order. My son went in and checked on our order twice - finally another waitress, who was very nice, came out and told us there was a problem with our order and they were discounting our meal. 10 minutes later the same nice waitress and another worker came and said that our order was totally messed up and they were comping our meal - we didn't ask for that, but thought the gesture was appropriate after waiting almost an hour for our food. My adult children got their meal, and kindly shared with me because I never did get served. The nice waitress came by and apologized again, said that they had sent the snotty waitress home because 'she was having a really bad day'. I told her that occasionally things happen and go wrong, but the mark of good service is the professional way that things are handled - and that she was doing a good job of trying to deal with the issue. Spoke WAY TOO SOON. The snotty waitress came out with the check, which included the order I never even received, and when I told her the meal should be comped and walked inside she stood on the patio and told my children 'well, you are SO welcome' then followed me into the building. I walked up to the nice waitress with the check in my hand and she said 'I don't know why you have that, but you shouldn't' and the snotty waitress just glared. I told her she was rude, and she said 'you are the first person to ever say that to me' I told her she gave terrible service and she said 'I am only human'. I am amazed that a local business that is typically well thought of would be OK with this type of behavior. The other waitresses were very nice, but I will not be back after being served by Atilla the Hun. Go elsewhere - until they learn to train their staff better this is not worth the effort. Sad - we used to love visiting this spot.

This place had an amazing rating; 4.5 stars with almost 250 ratings... I'm not sure why. It was fine, nothing bad about this place, but nothing really amazing either. Feels like the average diner/cafe. Breakfast sandwich was decent.

So we keep bringing friends to Penny Ann's, because we love sharing this spot. It is worth the wait, usually our party is 6 or more. We even have been served twice by Penny Ann! Her parents named the place after her and its family run. Excited to find out that you can order 1 biscuit and gravy as a side! Our kids love them so we order our youngest 1 for something inexpensive compared to a whole meal she won't eat or having to share mine :) Last time I got the Utah omelet (create your own option) with bacon, sausage, tomatoes, avaacdo and cheddar cheese. It came with house potatoes (which can be a hit or miss) that were perfectly done and instead of toast I went with the Heavenly pancakes. Because I love biscuits and gravy so much I also ordered a side of 1 biscuit and gravy for myself. Our party had a guy who is in the food business and he said it was all quality and tasty. Recommend this place to anyone who enjoys quality service and good food.

BEST HOTCAKES EVER. The Biscuits & Gravy are great - way above average. The omelets are average, but I'm not sure how you make an exceptional omelet anyway? I love the Reuben here! My husband is a Philly Cheesesteak snob, and he thinks Penny Ann's makes one of the best Phillys in Salt Lake.

i liked the chocolate mouse pie and the double burger i ordered. you have to ask for the lettuce and tomato and pickle yorself. it would be nice if they offer is verbally instead of writing it in the menu. homely little place too many children around while you eat.

My question is, how have I not reviewed Penny Ann's yet? I love everything about this place from the food to the staff. The staff is always oh so nice and helpful. They're great at remembering regulars. Let's get down to business: their food. I have been here for lunch and dinner and I haven't been disappointed yet. I think my favorite right now is their Reuben sandwich, side of onion rings. You have to get the rings. Perfectly battered and fried. The Reuben isn't for the faint of heart or anyone dieting. The rye bread is drenched in butter and grilled to a perfect crisp. There is a perfect amount of sauerkraut and meat. I find that most places put WAY too much of one or the other. Did I mention the sandwich is perfect in every way? I will say that Penny Ann's is the best Reuben I've found in Utah so far. I also love their chicken parmesan sandwich, philly cheesesteak, and chicken cutlet sub. Everything is always cooked just right. They have great specials too. I tasted the egg salad sandwich and that was pretty amazing. They often have really serious comfort food as specials. Think your mom's lasagna, beef stroganoff, and homemade soups. I hear their pastas are really great so that might be my next adventure. Okay, let's get serious now. For real. Their pies. Wow. Some of the best pies I have ever had in my mouth. Banana cream, peanut butter chocolate, coconut cream, peppermint cream, key lime, lemon raspberry, and the list goes on and on and on. I like to tell myself I'm not a sweets person but I would do just about anything for Penny Ann's pies. They're that good. Oh my. I think I need to get over there soon.

Amazing food. Everyone in my family was extremely happy, and our waitress was the best. Would definitely go again if I'm in the area. Reasonable price from a family owned restaurant. The French toast sandwich was excellent, biscuits and gravy were tasty, and everyone went away full. On the way in another family was talking about how good and reasonable the food was, and their review didn't disappoint either. Thanks PAC

  • Lisa R.

This place is wonderful. We decided to eat there after we checked out the reviews on Yelp and it did not disappoint. The Heavenly Hotcakes were truly heavenly and I do not even like Hotcakes very much. From the moment we walked in, we were treated like family by Cindy Lynn (older sister to Penny Ann) and we had a wonderful time and the food was fantastic. If things take a bit longer, please be patient as everything good takes some time. And it is totally worth it. It is a family business and everyone seems to really enjoy working together and the food and service reflect that. We came back thru Salt Lake today on our way back from Moab and tried to go back, but we forgot it was Father's Day, so there was a very long wait. We will be back next time, for sure!

Very small little restaurant, not too bad though. The food was really good, but the pancakes weren't what I thought they'd be. No wait, but I went early. The advertise free pie if you join their email list but don't send it until a day later so you gotta go back for the free pie. Wouldn't have joined if I knew that... Food came out pretty quick and they were on top of my bottomless coffee, just wish I got that pie!

If i could get here every Saturday before noon to eat breakfast, i would. Hands down my new favorite breakfast spot in SLC. I just wish they would serve their breakfast menu all day.... The cafe is fairly small and I've had to wait both times I showed up on Saturday mornings, but the wait was reasonable. It's located in what I think is an aprtment building and the inside has a cozy, neighborhood diner feeling Three words: HEAVENLY HOT CAKES. these sour cream pancakes are.... well, heavenly. and lucky for me, they come with every breakfast dish. The Pot of Gold takes the cake in my book.... potatoes, three kinds of meat, some veggies, topped with eggs and gravy??? AND PANCAKES??? uhhhh, is this really heaven? I've also tried the corned beef hash (delish) and the biscuits and gravy which were both good, but i don't think i'll be straying from the pot of gold again. Prices are really really reasonable (around $7 for the breakfast dishes) and considering i can never eat more than half of my plate, that's a win.

What a fantastic little establishment. There will be a wait so anticipate this. Its limited seating and very popular. The food is fantastic, the portions are large and the staff was friendly and helpful. Pancakes are incredible and should not be missed. Looking forward to your second location opening. If you need a new spot to try I recommend giving this a shot.

Small place, so there's always usually a wait, sometimes as long as 45 minutes. Their breakfast dishes are awesomely good, but their Heavenly Cakes are just that - heavenly! Have been to a whole lot of places for breakfast, but no place has pancakes as good as Penny Ann's! And it's not just the pancakes ... it's all good!

My favorite place for pancakes hands down! Secondly, when my Autistic son was on the verge of a meltdown, the waitress was able to calm him down and never made us feel uncomfortable over it. It's rare that anyone can calm my son down when he has his mind set on something. This means a lot to me and is A+ customer service that will keep us going back.

What an update already? YES, it was that good, I went back that same day for dinner. I went back with a long list of things I wanted to try, philly, reuben, spaghetti and meatballs. I ended up with the Chicken Parm, the breaded chicken was decent although a bit on the dry side, but barely. The real star was the homemade tomato sauce. Boy oh boy did it have F-L-A-V-O-R! The sauce paired with the perfectly cooked pasta made for a perfect pair. Now I really wished I had gotten a full plate of spaghetti. Earlier I had used the work "affordable" to describe this place. I misspoke, the food you get here is really first rate cuisine at half off... all the time. I can't wait to go through their menu, perhaps the reuben with their homemade corned beef. And pies, definitely pies. Especially now that i know when they are made.

So good. It's American comfort food at its best. Highly recommend. And staff (owners) are wonderful too! Went at lunch with a bunch of girlfriends. Only bummer is that it's not open for dinner. I had a spinach, blue cheese, candied nut salad that nearly had me licking the plate. And a Reuben. The whole deal was such a home run.

Amazing. Great and friendly staff and wonderful food!!! Well worth the wait to be seated. Don't let the swarm of people waiting scare you off when you walk in. Put your name in and just be patient. They do a great job of getting you seated as quickly as possible. While you're waiting for your table they came around to ask if you want coffee. Regardless of what you get, you have to try at least one of the hot cakes! My husband and I each had our own unique omelette and they came with hot cakes. So delicious- probably one of the best I've ever had (both the hot cakes and the omelette). They apparently make the hot cakes with sour cream to add to their fluffiness. The portions were large, so we took some of our food to go to enjoy later. Great for kids and adults to enjoy!

Cheap-ish and delicious, but be prepared to wait. We spent about $25 on breakfast for two people, but we also ordered a lot of food so we could sample the selection. If you have the chance, order a chocolate shake- they're amazing. And it's true what the other reviews say about the pancakes- best in town. Service can be a little slow just because I think they are overwhelmed but they're nice and accommodating.

Shame, shame, shame on ME (for eating here) and on YOU, for even THINKING about it! Don't you have ANY regard for your health?? So what if the menu items are incredibly delicious and if the Heavenly Hotcakes are, indeed, HEAVENLY! Is it really worth shortening your life by years by indulging in this place of culinary perfection? To be honest, YES IT IS! Casual digs, super-friendly servers, very soul- and tummy-satisfying comfort food--Penny Ann's has it all! Be prepared to wait for a table, however, as you're not the only one willing to sacrifice longevity for one of the best eating experiences in Utah!

The food was great. I had the chicken Parmesan sandwich and loved it. The service was a little slow though. They gave the dog water, we're exceptionally friendly and we will be back for dessert sometime soon.

Loved the food ! I suggest getting there a little early. This place is small and you most likely will have to wait a little over 10 minutes. Still worth it though :)

Why did it take us 2 years to find this gem? I feel cheated! Hubby & I ate breakfast here recently one morning. Oh my goodness. I've never been a fan of the term "hot cakes" but I no longer care what they call them here they are AMAZING. I had the breakfast nachos & they were such a neat treat. My husband had the corned beef omelet and said it was good but slightly under seasoned. We were both dying over the hotcakes though. AMAZING service & chit chat with the family who owns it. Perfect breakfast with near perfect food.

The breakfast is the best in town. I had lunch there for the first time on Monday. Also very good. Philly cheese steak was outstanding. Onion rings (with sauce) were bomb. The best thing: banana split pie. Blew me away. And can we just take a moment to comment on the service? Is there better service in SLC? Don't even.

The hot cakes really are as good as they say, but I've never had anything bad here. It can be crowded but worth the wait. The pies are delicious, and they sometimes have some crazy flavors to try, if you want something safe an delicious, get the buttermilk pie.

Love a great breakfast at Penny Ann's! I admit the curb appeal of the restaurant is lower than I was expecting. It's in the bottom floor of an old apartment building-- not exactly screaming "Hey! I'm an AWESOME restaurant!!!" But try to get past that because you have an array of deliciousness waiting for you inside. Here's why they get the big 5 star review from me. 2 words- HEAVENLY HOTCAKES! What on earth is inside those things?? It's almost not fair to compare them to pancakes. Pancakes are mediocre at best. These are fluffy clouds of heaven that the good Lord himself has blessed. It was like all of your wildest culinary dreams all coming true in dinner-plate sized hotcake form. You need some of these. If you can't decide what to have for breakfast, go for the hotcake sandwich. And have I mentioned the hotcakes? P.S. Our server Clay was great!

Long wait, inefficient staff, mediocre food. We came in for breakfast with a group of 8 and were told it would be a 30 minute wait if we split up, 45 if we wanted to stay together. We immediately agreed to split up, but still had to wait 45+ minutes to be seated. There seemed to be plenty of staff for the small place (at least 6 people wandering around outside the kitchen), but they were incredibly inefficient. Dirty tables would sit 10 minutes before being cleared, and then another 10 before people would be seated at them (despite the long wait list). When we were finally seated, one of the employees was bad mouthing (in Spanish) some customers who had just left (dropping the f* bomb and everything) while clearing the table next to us. (To their credit, the other staff was very polite. I guess the one girl was too, but just when she was speaking English) Our food came out another 30 minutes later. Everyone else seemed to be ok with their omelets and breakfast burritos (hence the two stars instead of just one). I just got the hot cakes, which I've read rave reviews about and was looking forward to. They were DISGUSTING! I'm pretty sure they use an entire stick of butter in the batter for just two pancakes. I couldn't stomach more than a few bites and others who received them as a side agreed. Hopefully we just came on an off day. No one checked on us at all after we got our food. We finally had to flag a waitress at another table to ask for our check. I guess I'm just used to the efficiency and amazingness that is the Park Cafe, but we definitely will never be returning here.

Holy Heavenly Hotcakes Batman! I've never been a pancake person, but Penny Ann's might have made a convert out of me. Theres really nothing else around this place and sits on an section of Main Street that I guess you could say is up and coming, or maybe was at one point up and coming, who knows. Point is, don't let the view from the street deter you...or do...more pancakes for me! Anyway, go check this place out. Coffee was decent but the pancakes were outta this world.

I do not know how this review is going to benefit the world or help my fellow yelpers since this place is the most talked about/highest rated breakfast place on yelp. I do not like pancakes but PAC's pancakes/heavenly hotcakes are something else. They are so crowded and the wait could be long but oh, it is so totally worth it. The butter they serve with the pancakes seems farm-fresh and so delicious ! The food was so good. The lunch menu looks great too and I am 100% sure I will go back. This is going to be my go-to place for weekend brunches.

I had the garlic burger and side Ceasar salad. The price is very reasonable. Location and parking is perfect. It is a very friendly place with great service. Penny Ann sister Cindy was very nice and met her Mother. It was very nice family own business.

Absolutely delightful breakfast cafe! I wish I could give it an extra star. This is a family business and feels like I'm eating in my grandma's kitchen. I had the pork chili verde skillet, delicious. And the hot cakes are a must! I can't wait until I'm back in SLC so that I can come back here! Great experience!

I've been meaning to stop in for at least 9 months and finally did it today. Service was so friendly and efficient, refills on my drink were done before I could ask. The Reuben was great as were the onion rings (I had a healthy lunch!) and overall I really enjoyed it for what it is, a hometown cafe. Also like that the food doesn't come rushing out so you really know that it is all to order. In my book, that is a good thing. Can't wait to try breakfast...

Drove by this place hundreds of times. Never had a clue this unassuming spot was this good. Went for breakfast with another friend. I had the corn beef hash, eggs, pancakes and rye toast. Hash wasn't my favorite, minced down a little too much, still ok though. The pancakes are some of the best I've ever had. Awesome!! Server was sweet and attentive. Hit this place up, you might have to wait a few minutes....

Today was my second visit to Penny Ann's and it couldn't be a better experience. My granddaughter and I each had salads, sandwiches and pie pie pie (took home an apple crumble, ate buttermilk and chocolate mousse there-yummy). Food is great: I had the grilled bacon, tomato, cheese and she had the chicken cordon. Will be back often, I have to try those pancakes.

This has become a favorite for our family. This place is cozy and peaceful. The food is always great, and the staff makes you feel like family. The Rueben is great! I also love the pasta, burgers, and sweet potato fries! Yum! I have had some veggies that weren't cooked all the way through- but over all this place is a 5 for me! Great Price, Place, and food!

Having moved to SLC from Utah recently, I've been looking for a new breakfast place. There are certainly some excellent options here, but I think I found my new morning headquarters at Penny Ann's. Unpretentious excellence with plenty of creativity seems to be their hallmark. The pancakes are, hands down, the best I've ever had. And the service is frequent, accurate and down home amiable. I haven't tried the pie, yet. A task for tomorrow, I think. I'll let you know how it goes.

They claim to have "Heavenly Hot Cakes" and yes they are! Some of the best pancakes I have ever. I also had the Pot of Gold - delicious! PAC is worth the morning wait. Drive on over and order some heavenly hot cakes, you won't be disappointed!

Went here last month, liked it overall. I got the biscuits and gravy which was HUGE, not bad taste, and even then still came with potatoes on the side. Their potatoes are extremely plain, they are seriously just potatoes crispy fried, almost like unsalted British chips, which was kind of disappointing. My husband's meal, Pot of Gold, was a better hit, very tasty and filling. I think based on just my dish I'd give three stars, but with the wide amount of breakfast dishes, nice service, and overall feel, I'm giving four. We'll be coming back for more. Watch out on Saturday mornings, though... we waited for ten minutes without a person even putting us on a list for a table.

This place simply rocks! Funny thing is I know one of the owners from my neighborhood, but didn't know this was their establishment till I'm waiting to be seated and see him running around. The food is killer! Admittedly, I've only eaten here for lunch, not tried the breakfast menu options. Fish & Chips were so good, Reuben was darn tasty, and their Chocolate PIE... if you like chocolate... YES PLEASE, even if you're full after your meal! It's a must try!!!

Wow! Great breakfast at Penny Ann's! The rundown: - friendly, engaging staff - great menu, wide variety - amazing hotcakes - make sure your order includes some - breakfast burrito was great - omelet was huge, although I probably wouldn't try the hash omelet again - watch out for the large OJ, it is HUGE! - it is not huge, so there can be a wait - don't be afraid to sit at the bar right next to the kitchen. lots of activity, but entertaining too - not far from downtown - in an "interesting" building that is a bit rundown - looks like they have outside seating when the weather is nice - Do It! Conclusion: Will go there again, next time I need breakfast in Salt Lake City

I went to Penny Anne's at around 8:30 on a Friday morning. I drove right by it on my first go because this restaurant is very tiny and attached to an apartment building. But if you pay more attention then I did, you'll see the little sign on the side of the building for the cafe. The inside is very small and a bit crowded, but I don't mind that so long as the food is good. I was asked what I wanted to drink by three different, very friendly waitstaff and I ordered a hot chocolate, mostly because I wanted to warm my hands. I could tell it was swiss miss, but let's be honest, a lot of mom and pop cafe's serve that and disguise it with a huge dollop of whipped cream. I'm alright with this. I ordered the Oregon State omelet with toast and potatoes. A lot of restaurant's omelets have that weird overly-fluffy quality to the egg that makes it seem not quite real. Not at Penny Anne's. Good old-fashioned egg through and through. Filled with delicious caramelized onions, bell peppers, sausage and cheese. And they didn't drown it in cheese, either, which meant I could appreciate all the other fillings too. It was topped with sausage gravy that was smooth and had nice, big chunks of sausage in it. A very delightful omelet. The potatoes. Oh my. These may be the very best breakfast potatoes I've ever had in my entire life. Chunky, but perfectly cooked and wonderfully crispy. Just SO good. I would go to Penny Anne's just for the potatoes alone. The servings were huge, it was enough for two full meals for me. And my order of a gigantic omelet, potatoes, 4 pieces of toast and a big mug of hot chocolate totaled $10! The only complaint I had was it took quite awhile to get my food, but they did get rather busy soon after I arrived, so I kind of expected it. The friendliness of the staff and the amazing food greatly overshadowed any dissatisfaction with the wait. I will definitely be going back to Penny Anne's. I can't wait to try their hotcakes!

I had been wanting to try Penny Ann's for a while and was SO disappointed. First off, we went on a Sunday morning. It was very crowded and the service was terrible. We waited for about 45 minutes for our food, and then our waiter got some of the orders wrong. Another thing was that we were all starving and a bunch of us wanted to order the full stack of pancakes. Our waiter told us that the servings were huge and there was no way we would eat all of them. We ended up ordering short stacks of pancakes. The pancakes were tiny! I don't think that place knows what big pancakes look like. I probably could have eaten 3 full stacks of pancakes. If you are wanting to go to breakfast in Salt Lake, pass on Penny Ann's and try somewhere else.

I went here on a Saturday morning and tried to get seating for four people. I walked inside the restaurant and it was loud and pure chaos. The two or three members of the wait staff walked by me multiple times without saying anything or even looking at me, not because they were rude I hope, but because they were under heavy stress and a seemingly insurmountable workload due to being understaffed as there were tables that needed to be cleared, food to be delivered, and many customers waiting to be seated. I kept feeling that it felt like a war zone with the chaos, noise and troubled/stressed/worried looks on the wait staff's faces (so people with PTSD probably shouldn't come here, seriously, not kidding). I would give more than one star and would normally not write this review, but no one spoke to me for ten minutes to even tell me they would get to seating me sometime in the future, so I left feeling a bit sad and ignored. I may give this place one more opportunity, and if I do, I will happily revise this review.

We are always on the lookout for a tasty breakfast spot around town, so when Penny Ann's kept popping up on yelp, we deciding to give it a try. The atmosphere is interesting, it sits at the base of a multi-level apartment building. Small but charming, they offer patio seating (which I'll opt for next time) tables, or booths (it was too hot back there.) We were greeted promptly by very friendly staff, our server took our drink and food orders quickly. We enjoyed some Johnny Cash and Carly Simon while we waited for our food. The menu for breakfast was pretty simple, one page boasting many omelets, a few specials, sourcream pancakes, french toast and sides. KIds menu included many of the same choices, with a drink included. Prices were incredibly reasonable 2 adults and 2 kids left very full for $25. Portions for the kids meals were perfect for our 2 and 4 year old ankle biters (eggs, toast, homefries and french toast respectively,) but older kids might leave wanting a little more. I ordered a full stack of 3 "HEAVENLY PANCAKES" while the husband ordered cornbeef hash with eggs and toast. Everything was very much enjoyed, except I noticed a few spots in the pancakes where the egg wasn't quite mixed in giving it a scrambled egg taste (I hate scrambled eggs.) It was just a consistency thing, but it kinda put me off a bit. The coffee was delightfully smooth, not sure of the brand, but it was really good, better than your typical diner coffee, for sure. I've also had a sampling of their pie at a Yelp event, so I know I'm going back for that! Stop in, you'll like it! SUPPORT LOCAL!

I can see a 5 star review coming down the road. I just didn't taste enough myself. I was here mid afternoon for a small group gathered because of the Serious Eats website. I just had a key lime pie with coffee. Everything was fairly priced. The coffee was not bitter. The pie was better than any cafe key lime pie I've had. The food others had looked good. They do a cheesesteak that looks good. You know that when the Amoroso rolls are being brought in from Philly, they are serious about them.

We had planned to go to our favorite breakfast buffet at a downtown hotel, but the line there was incredibly long on this pre-Christmas weekend. Instead we went for our first time to Penny Ann's Cafe and we were not disappointed. We waited about 30 minutes for a table and it was well worth the wait. Our party ordered the Big Breakfast, the Pot of Gold and the Utah Omelette. The pancakes were excellent...we had seen a review saying they are made with sour cream - whatever it is, our whole group was impressed. They are not the fluffy dry kind of pancakes...they are a bit more dense but still a pancake and with a great flavor. The service was friendly, we had our fill and spent about half as much as the hotel buffet. It was a great weekend breakfast - thanks Penny Ann's!

Our server Summer was great. She let us in on the pancake secret. They put sour cream in them. This place is tiny. Luckily there was no wait when we went. Everything was good, great value. 4.5 stars.

Is that your brain all over the floor or did Penny Ann's just blow your mind? That's their pie I'm talking about. It's pretty dang good. Other upsides include great service, a fun relaxed diner feel, and an amazing price for a sit down restaurant. I can't give it 5 stars yet because there is better food in Salt Lake. I'm not saying the food here isn't good, I was very happy with it. I'm just being honest. And I wish it stayed open a little later than 8:00 p.m. I can't go lower than 4 stars though.

Kept hearing that Penny Ann's had the "best pancakes ever" so we decided to give it a shot. The place gets busy after around 9-9:30 am on Sunday so come around 9 and you'll get a table right off the bat. Great service, delicious coffee, very affordable, and the "Heavenly Hot Cakes" were extremely tasty. Can't say for sure that they were the best I've ever had, but in Top 2 for sure. I ordered the Home-made Corned Beef Hash which was incredible. Throw some Cholula on top and it's amazing. I asked that they scramble my eggs dry and crispy (which no one ever really gets right) but these guys did! They actually listened to my request and communicated it to the cooks. Was very impressed. My wife ordered the Pot of Gold and it was a huge pile of food. She LOVED it, especially the sausage gravy on top. We'll keep coming back here for sure.

I'm not a huge pancake/hot cake person. I've had some better than others, but for the most part, I've always been skeptical that one could really have an "amazing" pancake. I stand corrected. The omelettes are good, the services is super prompt and courteous - careful or you will OD on coffee with how quickly they refill it! But seriously, whatever you do, have the PANCAKES. OMG. I ate 1 without syrup before I even realized what I was doing. It was that good. And if you're like me, you'll be stuffed. ABSOLUTELY get a piece of pie to go. So far I've had the buttermilk (it's lemony), lemon-raspberry, and chocolate peanut butter. I love them all!!!

  • Alice Y.

    I. Love. This. Place. Plus, now that they're open for breakfast on Sundays too, there's nothing not to like! I have friends who are absolutely obsessed with their pancakes, and for good reason. They're fluffy, soft, a little crispy on the outside, and absolute sponges for the syrup that is provided. Their gravy is so delicious- so I tend to go for one of their breakfast options that are smothered with it. And then if you arrive later in the daytime, I've had yummy experiences with everything I've ordered on their menu- pot roast, chicken parm... oh man! I'm getting hungry now! Oh, and the clientele there is always good for some people watching. The restaurant is on the first floor of a low-cost apartment building that I'm always wondering if it's also an assisted living facility. Whenever I go there, I see a strange mix of hipsters and people who have just exited the hospital- jazzies, walkers, home oxygen, TED hose... it's all there.

Yum. Yum. Oh, and Yum if you didn't catch it the first or second time. Penny Ann's is the quintessential perfect homey diner. And I mean homey in the happy, warm, friendly, "I'm home" sense (assuming you think of home as warm and lovely). The food is hot, delicious, and priced fairly. I'm not sure you can go wrong here. And even if you end up ordering something and discover it didn't knock your socks off (because there's no way anything here is bad) you only spent a small amount and you more than got your money's worth. What adds even more fun (and heart) to this place is the simple fact that it is a family affair. Look into the kitchen? You'll see brothers Warren and Paul cooking away. Their sister Cindy helps in front of the house and you might even get to see their mom. I'm a little in love with their sweet and happy family. Lastly, even if you are not a big pie fan, you will want the pies made here. So many options, and so little stomach space. I guess it just means we will be back - again and again and again. I'll try not to order the peanut butter chocolate pie - even if it calls my name - in order to give the other pies a chance.

I'm always on the lookout for a great breakfast joint. I love the homey local spots much more than a Dennys or IHOP. After trying the pies from Penny Ann's at an Elite event a few months ago (and winning their PieKu haiku contest), I've been meaning to visit. When a friend came into town and wanted to do breakfast, she was very eager to try Penny Ann's too. She got the biscuits and gravy, and I got a delicious monstrosity called the "Pot of Gold" - breakfast potatoes, bacon, cheese, onions, peppers and mushrooms smothered in sausage country gravy. And if that wasn't enough, it came with a stack of "heavenly cakes," which are some of the yummiest "traditional" pancakes I've ever tried. It was comfort food gluttony at it's finest. Although I could not even finish half of it, I left feeling completely satisfied and rolled back out to my car. The prices are reasonable, and the service is wonderful. The location is a bit odd, adjoining some kind of hotel/apartment building, but I didn't have a hard time parking. I have drooled over their dinner menu, and am sure to give it a try sometime soon.

My boyfriend and I go to Penny Ann's often for morning breakfast dates. I would say it is easily the best breakfast place in the valley. It feels small, in a great way, no matter how many people they are able to fit in there. Such an easy going and enjoyable place to be.

We HAD to check out Penny Ann's Cafe! Just look at all the raving 5 star reviews- pretty impressive! We stopped in for dinner tonight about an hour before they closed and found it to be half full. We took a booth in the back and were greeted quickly by our server, Andrew, who was friendly, attentive and offered his favorites, but throughout the night, bordered on hovering. We started with a small order of sweet potato fries because we were starvers! The small was huge! They came with fry sauce that I didn't love (I'm not really a condiment lady), but my boyfriend did! The fries were crispy and crunchy- good! I ordered Eggplant Parm with fettuccine and tomato basil cream sauce. He ordered Chicken Piccata. Mine was good. about 3 pieces of lightly breaded, thinly sliced eggplant on top of the pasta, served with what looked like a homemade breadstick. The sauce did taste extremely homemade. My boyfriend was happy with his choice- there was plenty of chicken and capers on top of his pasta and he said the sauce was good. Everything was just good. We were satisfied. We ended up taking a piece of Berry Crumble pie to go, as we were full, but could not leave without trying their famous pie. The pie was definitely the best thing we had from Penny Ann's! The crust was crumbly and perfect, and the filling was sweet and chock full of berries. I thought the decor was cheap and cheesy, like it was trying really hard to be an Italian restaurant, instead of a greasy spoon, comfort food cafe that it is. Own it, Penny Ann's- don't try to be what you aren't! We probably will not be back for a sit down meal- while nothing was wrong with anything, the whole experience (food, service, ambiance) was rather unremarkable. There are certainly plenty of other places to eat in Salt Lake, and it was not special enough that we'd ever be craving it, but I may come back for pie!!

The pancakes are as great as everyone says, far and away the best thing on the menu. Otherwise, my Penny Pot Potatoes were only okay and my husband's Arizona State Omlette had pickled jalapenos, not the fresh and tasty kind. Weak coffee. Otherwise, a cute little place with friendly service.

The pie, oh, the pie! I brought back a few slices for me and some coworkers after lunch. The banana cream, the key lime and the coconut creme are delicious and just as delicious as any homemade pie I've ever had. I had a BLT for lunch with some sweet potato fries. Even with a packed house, my dish came out in a timely manner. The sandwich was perfect, everything you'd want and expect in a BLT and the fries were delicious as were the onion rings I shared with my lunch mates. I can't wait to get back to try more.

First of all YUMMMMM!!!!!! Everything I have had here has been incredible. My personal favorite is the corned beef hash. They make it in house, no canned meat in this corned beef hash! To top of the amazingness of the corned beef hash they serve it with their hot cakes. The hot cakes are a perfect combination of fluff and density. Perfectly sweet without being too sweet. The service is always friendly and quick. In the warmer times of the year they have an outside patio that I love to sit on to visit with friends or read a book and drink a cup of coffee.

This place is in a Salt Lake City version of mixed use development. It's situated in an apartment building off a major street. With that said, the service is among the best I've seen and the food is prepared with care. The food is good but the service is great.

They aren't kidding about the heavenly hot cakes! These are the best pancakes I've ever had. The rest of the food was good, but not great. We had three in our party, we all ordered a savory dish - chile verde skillet, penny pot potatoes, California omelet. The potatoes were not to my liking - large slices, kind of like medallions, and not seasoned (they really should change to a better potato). Next time, I'll order pancakes and a side of bacon or eggs. Even though the rest of the food isn't great, I'm giving it 4 stars just for the pancakes. The place is small and crowded and has minimal parking. There really isn't anywhere to wait for a table and there are a lot of servers. Other menu notes: The omelet naming is clever - P.A.C. 12 (Penny Ann Cafe) omelets. Each one is named after one of the PAC-12 schools and matches the local flavor (Colorado is a Denver omelet). We didn't order dessert, but the pies look tasty.

Really good pancakes and breakfast. The restaurant is very crowded on the inside, and service can be slow, but the food is good.

Simply amazing. This small, unpretentious cafe was an instant favorite with me from the moment we stepped through the doors. The food is good, yes, but really its the people that make this place so great. You could not ask for more gracious and attentive staff. I feel like the owners of Penny Ann's really care about me as a customer and put their heart and soul into this place. It feels nice. It's diner food, but it's diner food worthy of 5 stars for experience alone. I am in love with their breakfast potatoes. Simple with some sea salt, but craveworthy nonetheless. The veggie omelet is huge and tasty and I could eat it every morning and never get tired of it. They make the perfect thin, yet fluffy, layer of egg and pack that sucker full of veggies and fold it up like a burrito almost. The real star here is the pie. If you love pie, then Penny Ann's is your place. I had the pleasure of tasting the banana cream and the key lime and both were decadent and amazing. They also have pecan pie and a chocolate-peanut butter that I'm told are great, but sadly I'm allergic. Quite possibly the best cheap eats in the Salt Lake area. Check it out, you won't be sorry.

It is with a heavy heart, anticipating a serious blow to my diet, that I report that Penny Ann's has added a new pie flavor: peppermint. Graham cracker crust, a layer of chocolate ganache, a generous field of peppermint-flavored mousse, topped with some crumbled, soft peppermint candies. It is absolutely delicious and the next time I visit, I'll have a real decision on my hands deciding between it and the peanut butter. Oh, and speaking of the peanut butter pie, I put it head-to-head the other day with my long-time PB favorite, the peanut butter cream cheese pie from Dodo. Although I love the nut and cinnamon crust of the Dodo pie to a degree that makes choosing between them very, very difficult, Penny Ann's won, because I finished without feeling like I'd inhaled lead shot and paid half the shekels, too. I'll be in soon!

I had read all of the wonderful reviews and expected Penny Ann's to be top notch. After waiting forty minutes to be seated (while there were consistently two or three tables open that the staff was unwilling to clean) I was ready to eat some of their famous pancakes. We waited and waited for water and menus. Another fifteen minutes before we could even look at what they had to offer. Not knowing that members of my group are native Spanish speakers, two employees cleaned a table near our group while complaining in Spanish about the family that was sitting there moments ago. My group was highly offended that the employees were telling each other that that family should just "F*** off and never come back because they brought their kids". Ready to walk away from the terrible experience, our food came out to the table. Both the omelette that I ordered and the one that my boyfriend ordered was completely different than what the menu showed. The only explanation was that they ran out and didn't think to ask if we wanted a replacement. The pancakes had clearly been cooked long before we even ordered as they were soggy on parts and hard/rubbery on other parts. They figured that coating it in about half of a cup of butter would solve the problem though. Basically, the staff was horrible, inefficient, and rude. The wait time was ludicrous for the amount of tables they had open, and the food was nothing to brag about. I will never be there again and will never recommend this place to anyone. My friends have already been warned and have steered clear.

PRESENTATION: The presentation of this place is small, but very cozy. They even have an outside section. TASTE: Well we've came here twice and the first time we missed the deadline for breakfast, but we got lunch instead. I got a chicken salad sandwich and my boyfriend got the Reuben, we both thought our sandwiches were decent. Then we finally came back and got breakfast and lets say I'm not the biggest fan of pancakes at all, I don't mind eating them if I have to, but let me tell ya the waiter suggested it and said that it was not like any other pancake and that it was a little sweeter and it was light and fluffy! Lets say she was right it was delicious! I loved it and everything else we order. SERVICE: The first time we came for lunch the server took forever to get out to us, but when we came for breakfast we had a great server always attentive to us and helped us when we needed. VALUE: We had a groupon to place so it helped us out a lot, but for the food you get its a really a good price.

Welcome home. You can't quite call Penny Ann's a diner. It's got a lot of diner-esque qualities about it, though. Lots of booths, a super friendly staff, and a nice throwback bar with black padded stool tops and lots of chrome. But the food is just a little too creative and delicious to be relegated to the connotations associated with being a diner. You can't really call it a café, either. The folks who run the place -family and a few of their new friends - are just too nice and so down to earth that café seems a bit too pretentious. The food is creative enough to fit that standard, but with classics like spaghetti, chicken fingers, and hearty sandwiches (including a homemade reuben with house-recipe meat) it's a little too comfortable for those café connotations. So where does that leave Penny Ann's? It's home. Welcome home. Welcome to a home where a talented family makes and serves you food that's fresh, flavorful, and comfortable. Sit at the bar and get your breakfast, nab a booth and spends some time for lunch or dinner, or sit out on the patio with your pals. But make yourself at home. I've got a lot of the menu to get through still, but the couple of things that I've tried have been dead on what you would want from a place like Penny Ann's. They're not fluffing anything up, whipping up a demi-glaze, or sculpting your plate to be a work of art, so don't go in hoping for an epicurean adventure. Expect to wrap your taste buds in an comfy embrace of good old-fashioned food that's done with attention to detail and love, and perhaps a new twist or two. And you won't pay much for it -prices are very reasonable. And now let's talk pie. Oh, sweet pie. Sweet siren of the dessert world that haunts my dreams. Oh, beautiful pie! Monday is pie day, and that's when the pies are made. You can call then and see what pies are on the menu that week. You'll probably find a key lime pie offered. Say yes. It's much creamier than any other key lime I've tried, but packed that perfect tart limey punch. Yes! They also are known to feature banana cream, coconut cream, and pecan pie. But it can change each week, so go early and go often. When needed, they bake a few reinforcements later in the week. And after talking it over with the crew, it sounds like the word is getting out about the pies and they're flying out of the tins pretty quick. Thank you pie gods! There's no place like home!

I love pancakes but don't always get them with brunch for fear that they won't be amazingly light and fluffly with a delicate flavor. I was excited to hear that Penny Ann's has scrumptious pancakes and I was by no means disappointed. I got an omelet (I think the Oregon?) with sausage, cheese, and jalapenos topped with their homemade country gravy. This came with hash browns and their Heavenly Hot Cakes. I've never had an omelet slathered in gravy, but it was quite tasty, their potatoes perfectly crispy and their pancakes were PERFECT! Honestly, next time I might just get a stack of pancakes so that I don't fill up on the other stuff. This is a pretty small restaurant so there was a wait on Saturday morning, but it really wasn't bad. They have comfortable booths and our server was very attentive and helpful with recommendations. Their prices are very reasonable, especially for how amazing their food is. I love local restaurants-I saw Penny Ann, her mother, and I'm sure other family members there which I thought was fun.

Five girls converged on Salt Lake City from FL, DE, and NV - all a little worn from the travel, and just dreaming of getting ourselves to Yellowstone. But first, we need fuel. After hours of airports, planes, and with a five hour drive ahead of us we wanted something fast, filling, relatively cheap, but not something that feels like "fast food". We searched trusty Yelp for a sandwich shop and found ourselves at Penny Ann's Cafe. This was the first of MANY good decisions. The service was incredibly friendly (ah, UT and it's friendly residents, a wonderful change from home!), it's a quaint little bakery/diner with a pretty extensive menu of soups, salads, and mostly sandwiches and burgers. I got the eggplant parmesan which was surprisingly awesome. The eggplant was very thinly sliced and very lightly battered, then layered with the cheese and served with just the right amount of marinara. I polished this off, making sure I was saving room for desert. Others in the group got a simple but tasty grilled cheese (with a classic, creamy white American cheese, among many cheese choices), a reuben (apparently one thing they're known for), and some broccoli cheese soup. The sandwiches were fantastic. Apparently the gals were slightly disappointed that the broccoli cheese soup was broth not cream based, so while tasty, it was a bit thinner than they expected. The REAL reason to come here is the pie! *drool* The selection is extensive for such a small place (maybe 10 tables in all). Among the five of us we chose the peanut butte rchocolate, coconut, buttermilk, key lime, and raisin pecan pies. Luckily, most people thought the one they ordered was their favorite. The buttermilk was mine - ordered largely because I had no idea what buttermilk pie is and I'm always up for a new experience. It was incredible! One of those old-fashioned simple recipes - like grandma's pasta sauce - that just can't be beat. Creamy, slightly tangy, subtle yet complex. A good, simple, creamy pie. The next winner in the group was the Key Lime. Our FL gal was practically moaning uncontrollably while eating this. Peanut butter and chocolate is always good, as was this, but you can get those flavors together in other walks of life, so it wasn't as stunning as the others. The only one that was generally "meh" was the coconut. The flavor was just a bit too mild for our tastes. With the sandwich and generous slice of pie coming to around $10 -12 per person, the price can't be beat for that quality. Penny Ann's may have me on a flight from LAS to SLC again in the near future...

Wow! Amazing food and very friendly staff. I had vegetable beef soup, the Grilled Reuben and peppermint cream pie. This was the first veggie beef soup that I actually ate the beef instead if spooning it aside. They use good quality beef instead of the cheap stuff everyone else uses! The Reuben was stuffed full of excellent beef sliced paper-thin. And the pie - can't say enough about it! Contrary to the sign, the driveway next to the cafe does not lead to automatic gates, at least not during business hours. There are 5 or 6 spots in back reserved for the cafe. Absolutely a new fav.

Nice place to eat. I would have never known about it had it not been for the Yelp app. This is a great little café, limited seating, good service and great food. I had a club sandwich and it was huge (for a club) with onion rings. Both were very good at I believe a good price. Check it out if you're in the neighborhood ie neighborhood=salt lake valley. I came from the Draper area and it was worth it find a nice place to eat like this.

Yes, echoing the chorus here, 'tis the big Five for Penny Ann's from me as well, indeed! Classic diner food (with a well-regulated penchant for home-cooked, gourmet creativity) prepared perfectly... to a tee! In fact, Jimmy Stewart or Grace Kelly would have been all over this menu nightly, no doubt! I'm glad to see someone has finally made this spot work-- A lot of places have tried and failed to work it out here over the years. My dad lived in the adjoining Terrace Suites in the sixties! Fortunately, it looks like PA's is here to stay. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, the food is very consistently top-notch, and the attentive staff is congenial and down-to-earth. Unusually classy, yet casual... in fact, rare places like this to me reaffirm that we're still living in a world of sane people somewhat, and that there's something to look forward to yet, particularly through the obvious dedication of a team really working hard at making EXCELLENT FOOD ALL THE TIME. To be in that neighborhood and maintain an upbeat atmosphere is a feat in itself. [Not to worry-- there's always parking in front and big windows from which to keep an eye on your car. (just kidding.) ;) ] This is an ideal place for a date as well, actually, even if you're sitting at the counter. Get the table near the fireplace, though, if possible. Good memories can be chiseled out of our smoggy, monolithic metropolis at this charming little jewel of a restaurant, for sure. If there's anyplace in town deserving of a stellar review, it's Penny Ann's.

My friend and I just had breakfast here. The biscuits and gravy were phenomenal and the service was great. So why the 2 star reduction? It's 18 below out and they sat us right in front of the door. When a group of 12 walked in, there wasn't enough standing room, so they stood with the door open. It chilled our food so we quickly paid and left.

I've been waiting to try this place for over a year, and could kick myself that I didn't get over there sooner. We had lunch this afternoon with my daughter and her fiance and absolutely everything was amazing. 4 different options and 5 stars on each of them, Philly Cheese Steak, Buffalo Chicken Sub. the Cluck Cluck Sub, and the Grilled Ruben . . . . which really should get 6 stars. To make the experience even better, I can honestly say I have never seen such a friendly and helpful wait staff, completely blown away there. We had them wrap up 4 different slices of pie to try after dinner. I fully expect to drift off to sleep tonight in a wonderful pie-eating induced haze. My husband is already insisting we head back for breakfast tomorrow.

Best breakfast in town. The best pancakes on EARTH. I love this place. The staff is great, and usually always happy. One time I went in and they all seemed a little pissy, but that was one time out of the 20+ times I have been there. Try the pie, it's amazing. It's pretty small, I'd say best for groups of 1-4. Kids are iffy... it's just small...

Couldn't be happier. Service was excellent-Very friendly and quick. Server (Kallan) offered recommendations which I took and he didn't steer me wrong. Had the Sidewinder with fries and lemon raspberry pie. Delish! No need to keep looking - if you are near here - GO!

We are a fan for sure, they are so friendly and she came back to refill our coffee at the right time. We just picked up my cousin from Cali and this was the first establishment we visited, and she was impress. haha We had kids with us and they didnt mind that my toddler was loud and messy. I love places that accommodate the kids. I got their breakfast sandwich and man was it jammin'. The food was not greasy unlike other diners, I dont know why we go to Ihop when there are places like this. The food took a lilo while but we know it is made when order so we know its fresh off the grill. Yummo. Oh and the price is awesome!!!

One thing. Food was great. We were here for breakfast on a Sunday. I ordered the Oregon omelet with sausage gravy. Fried potatoes on the side were heavenly! A- My friend ordered the Arizona State omelet and let me try some. And again! Heavenly! A- One thing. The SERVICE. The waiter who introduced us to our table was very nice and inviting.... The waiter who took our orders...... Not so much. My friend asked for a cup of coffee and forgot it. He also asked for cream. I heard the waiter say ' Wow, picky.' SO YOU'RE SAYING A DANG CUP OF CREAM IS SO HARD TO GET?! I would say a C+ on this one. So overall, food was great, place was busy, service not so good. We will definitely come back and get some pie if they are not busy. (Which is like... never)

This was our second time in. We just love it! Wish we lived closer. First time I got the Reuben- amazing! Hubs got the club sandwich, it was great as well. They have great fries and great fry sauce too. This time we got the chicken cordon bleu sandwich- soooo amazing!! And the California club- it was good as well. I got a free slice of pie because it was my birthday, woot woot! We tried the sweet potato pie- holy amazeballs. I could not believe how good it was! Try it for sure! Then we took a banana cream pie home too- it was way good! Can't wait to visit again!!

Ok ya so it says Heavenly Pancakes on the menu so I ordered them nit expecting much along with the #10 omlet & ya they came, I ate, I failed, they won omg the pancakes are by far the best ive ever had and they some how can fill you up as if you had an entire buffet with only 2 of them then the omlet that I was only able to get into about a quarter of was amazing with pepperjack and cheddar cheese, sausage, ham, and spinach it was better than the rest but nothing compares to the god fearing heavenly pancakes at this joint & if u ask for the reciepy youll get nothing out of them other than they may be use alittle sour cream to make them but they taste like theyve been cooked in butter. Wow im craving them.

I've been there both for lunch and breakfast, and the food has always been great. Delicious home-cooked food, generous portions, and reasonable prices. What more could you want? I've never had any problem with the service, but I usually go at times when it's less busy. It's a very small place, so for best service, that's probably the thing to do. There's not much parking on the street in front, but there's a parking lot in the back, too. The Eggplant Parmesan and home-made Corned Beef Hash are a couple of my favorites.

This place took me by surprise, first off, the only way I found out about this place was through a money mailer coupon ( : Secondly, the service as hospitality is bar none! I guess their reviews keep disappearing, I hope this one stays so you can come and enjoy this place as much as I did. I will be back for sure. Their Philly steak and chicken Parm was made with so much love! Go check out this gem!

We were in from out of town and looking for a hole in the wall to eat breakfast...this place definitely fit the bill. The portions were generous, the pancakes were amazing, the waffle with banana and caramel was "the best I've ever had," to quote my 18 year old daughter. We ordered two kids meals and two adult meals and there was plenty for 6 of us. Total bill including a 20% tip...$60. We will be back next time we are in Salt Lake City!

Horrible service. The food might be wonderful, I am not rating that as 1 star as we were never even seated. The staff however, could not have been more rude. After fighting for a parking space (there are very few and people were double parked) we walked into the cafe and sat down while we waited to be seated at a table. After being ignored for about 5 minutes, two people came in behind us and were helped right away. They were put on a waiting list and then the waitress walked away from us, even after trying to get her attention. This same thing happened again a few minutes later to two other people who came in after us. This time we did get the waitresses attention and she told us to sit down and we'd be helped soon. All if this happening, by the way, next to two empty booths. I will never be going back.

PENNY ANN'S CAFE is like WOW! I went to this GREAT place for lunch on Wednesday and I had to go back on Thursday for breakfast!! I really enjoyed the food. The scone was deep fried and fattening the way scones should be- I'm always on the lookout for a true Utah scone, and this passed the test. 4 stars because we waited a very long time for our food- meanwhile a group of 12 came in after us and all were served before us. My dining companion asked for "extra extra crispy" corned beef hash and was not impressed with its mushiness. Still, I plan to give it another try, and hopefully update the rating :-)

I realized that when I first reviewed Penny Ann's I was newish to reviewing, had only been there once, and was at the time a little stingy with handing out 5 star reviews. I only gave it 4 stars. I was so, so wrong and I am so, so sorry. This place is 5 stars easily. It's a place I could eat at multiple times a week and never get bored. It's a place to go for lunch, dinner, breakfast, or a quick slice of pie. The funny thing is, I've never had a "quick" experience here. Not because the service isn't quick. It's as fast as you can expect from a place that is making your delicious food for you while you're sitting there, and they are making it from scratch with an extra scoop of pure love mixed in. If you're in a hurry, call ahead, their menu is online so it's super easy. I say not quick because it's like being in a friend's kitchen. It's inviting and homey and perfectly okay to sit and gab. The people who operate this place are a family, and they act like it, and they instantly make you feel at home also. Come in, and hang out. Sit and visit. Enjoy yourself. And eat pie. The food is delicious. In my previous review I mentioned the chicken cutlet sandwich, and that's still my go-to lunch order. My opinion is that the best thing to do is split the sandwich and an order of sweet potato fries with a friend in order to save room for a slice of pie. Because the pie is magical. My favorite is still the banana cream, but there's a new kid on the block: Cookies and Cream. I don't know how they do it, but the creamy filling of the pie tastes exactly like the filling of an Oreo cookie. Except. Not greasy. Just wonderful. Maaaaagic.

Oh Penny Ann's, you can do no wrong! Every time I've been here to eat, they remember my name, Im asked how I am and somewhere between a greeting and casual chit chat my orders been taken and my food is almost done. Their REUBEN! and the chicken cutlet sandwich are my favorite! Ask for some of that garlic aioli for your frys if you get them- it's delightful. But only eat 1/2 of your sandwich (it reheats fantastically) because you're going to want pie!

Came here today, based on the yelp community reviews alone. Got to say, once again, y'all were spot on. I'm always on the lookout for those out of the way places with awesome food. Found it! This place is small, but the food is HUGE! Had the biscuits and gravy with a side of hash, and I used the yelp coupon for 50%off on a slice of pie. The whole thing was great, but the pie, Omg, the pie! Chocolate peanut butter, like heaven on a plate.

You can't help passing it by and not noticing Penny Ann's, it's nothing to look at from the outside. It sits in an old 1960 apartment building. Once inside a nice staff greets and lets you seat yourself. We both had the Biscuits & Gravy. A nice large portion and very homemade, so tasty. I look forward to trying lunch or dinner, menu is very diner home cookin' comfort.

Honestly, I don't get what the fuss is all about. Penny Ann's is mediocre at best. I ordered the fish and chips; the chips were soggy and the fish was disgusting. I had a bit of my dinner companion's Reuben, and it was just OK. The chili was also just OK. Everybody raves about how cheap it is, but the cheapness sure shows in my opinion. I'd rather pay a few more dollars and have decent fish and chips. The only good thing was that the service was ridiculously nice and fast.

We have been to Penny Ann's three times now. I think that says it all, but if you like details, read on! The pie is AMAZING! Definitely, the best pie that I've had in SLC. I'm a southern girl, so I was a little disappointed to learn that the cream pies are topped with cream rather than meringue. Other than that, the pie is definitely yummy. :) The sandwiches are really good as well. I have had the Philly and the Reuben and would order them again. Be sure to order the sweet potato fries. Again, the best I've had in SLC. As some of the other raters have commented on, Penny Ann's is super affordable. If you like the place, join the Penny Ann's club. They often send out coupons for free pies and entrees.

Their pie is down right amazing. Very rich and flavorful but not all sugary like most diner pie. And when was the last time you went to a diner named after a person that still works there and also makes all the pies? I had coconut cream, and the wife had blueberry ala mode. It was probably some of the best pie I've ever had! They use home made whipped cream. Their lunch/dinner food was good too. Unfortunately I found it to be super greasy. Whether or not you want burgers and fries, absolutely do not skip the pie! Good lord don't skip the pie. It's good. It's "Twin Peaks" good.

Very good breakfasts at this small place on Main Street, situated on the ground floor of an old folks' apartment building. Fair prices, efficient service make this a desirable place for people with limited incomes. Small patio open when weather permits.

I absolutely love this place. The breakfast food is very good and the pancakes are amazing. Besides that, the service is superb -- from every single person who has ever helped me there. Love it!

The Classic Grilled Reuben was excellent - I would definitely recommend that sandwich. The Fish & Chips were good but I wouldn't say great - though I can't complain as the portion is big and it's rather inexpensive for what you get. The space was clean and the staff friendly. All in all an enjoyable experience.

This place was a really pleasant surprise. Found it through Yelp after arrival in SLC and it seemed a little nondescript. But the service is amazingly friendly and the food quality matches. I had the chicken cordon blue sandwich and it was delicious. We made a point of returning on our way home before our flight.

This happened: Jeffrey S makes a call into Penny Ann's. They tell us what pies they have. They also mention that they were planning on closing up. But wait for it -- they stay open because we are ON OUR WAY! *Peppermint Cream Pie* *Peppermint Cream Pie* *Peppermint Cream Pie* Darn, I thought if I wished for it three times that one would magically appear. It was exactly how they said it would be: the pie would *talk* to you. It would dance it's way to your mouth. It would sing you a holiday song. Am I hallucinating? No. I'm just having withdrawals... to an addiction that only took one piece to hook me: the graham cracker crust, the little, chewy peppermint candies, the mousse-like filling. The minty freshness. Oh the freshness. How is it possible that this piece of piece cost less than $3? *Peppermint Cream Pie* *Peppermint Cream Pie* *Peppermint Cream Pie* Oh, dear, this is serious, people! If anyone can hear my pleas, please get me another piece of pie! And pick up a piece of chocolate peanut butter for yourself while you're there!

I just love breakfast food, and especially diner breakfast food. I first heard about Penny Ann's at a yelp event and decided to invite a couple of my co-workers to breakfast there after a night shift. The food is just great and the prices are so low. On this visit I tried the biscuits and gravy with eggs and I loved it. But I think the reason I've been back is because of everyone that works there. They are also helpful and you can see how grateful they are for your business.

Great prices and good food, but very low on atmosphere and I waited a long time to be seated. The staff was friendly, but spread too thin. I will return, but not with people who prefer a more relaxed and nicer environment. I recommend this place if you want a hardy breakfast at a very low price and don't expect a much in atmosphere.

Service gets 5 stars. The staff is extremely nice and on top of it! The food is good hometown cooking. The place is small and there isn't a wait area. So if it's cold outside and there is a wait, this isn't the restaurant to be waiting for a table at!

  • Amanda H.

My new favorite lunch spot! I have discovered the heaven that is their chicken parm sub. The chicken is plump and juicy and the breading is the perfect blend of light and crispy. Marinara sauce is served on the side. Ask for more, it's delish. Also the sweet potato fries are super good! And don't get me started on the peppermint pie. Perhaps the only thing better than the food is the service. Not the fastest, but worth the wait for this kind of quality. But the Penny Ann and her sister Cindy Lynn could not be any nicer. You really feel like you're eating in their home. They recognize their usual customers and make you feel like you are their only customer...even though the place is packed lately thanks to the stellar reviews in the Trib and City Weekly. The secrets out...go to lunch early.

My husband and I love to come here for breakfast, especially in the warmer months because they allow our dogs to eat with us on the patio. Great endless coffee. The omeletts and potatoes are pretty delicious, too. For dinner my husband loves Reuben sandwich (says it is amazing) and I am obsessed with the multiple types of homemade pies, including chocolate peanut butter.

This is the breakfast joint that I have been looking for. Old school, diner feel but with that extra something special. Had the pleasure of being served by Penny Ann herself on Saturday morning. First of all, the coffee was excellent. They have their own blend that they grind and mix and it is dark and rich...trust me, I was paying for the 5 cups I had later that day. The breakfast menu was typical but special in that you can taste the homemade! The heavenly hot cakes are indeed heavenly! I implore you to go here and try them. I made my own omelette with onions, tomatoes, mushrooms and swiss. Loved having the onions carmelized...this detail means a lot to me as I have a serious love affair with carmelized onions! The definitely did not skimp on the abundance of ingredients. I also must mention that the prices are out of this world! When I say out of this world, I mean CHEAP! Took home some slices of pie after reading fellow yelpers...chocolate peanut butter and coconut cream. Dear Lord, I am madly in love. I want to place my order for Thanksgiving pies NOW!

Best. Pancakes. Ever. I'm ruined for run-of-the-mill places like Village Inn forever. Now I've gotta go back for pie...

Great service. Xander was a nice kid and prompt. He was very patient with us because we had a 2 year old who was a little rowdy. The pancakes are AMAZING. Man, they're good. The homemade corned beef hash, however, was decent...nothing to rave about.

What a hidden gem! My husband discovered Penny Ann's Cafe while scouring yelp for new places to eat in Salt Lake. It had decent enough reviews so we figured we should check it out. At first glance I would of totally passed by this little cafe, it was not remarkable in appearance nor decor but the food...wow! I had the Reuben which was amazing, grilled to perfection and came with a pickle. My husband had the buffalo chicken sub which was the perfect amount of spicy and tangy chicken on a bun. After dinner came the pie. Amazing, glorious pie. I had the banana cream pie, which was divine and a very generous serving size. My husband enjoyed a slice of the chocolate peanut butter pie which he love and literally liked his plate clean. The service was great and our server was very friendly and helpful. At the end of our meal one of the owners came over with a kids cup full of water and some crackers for our little girl for the car ride home. I was impressed and I would recommend this place for adventurous dinners in search of homemade dishes and a cozy diner atmosphere.

It's definitely true what they say. You pay for what you get. The food was surprisingly cheap but so was the service. We waited 45 mins before our food finally made it to our table. One of the waitresses argued that we had only been waiting 30 mins. Well excuse me!! That's still too damn long of a wait time for food.

After three separate experiences with Penny Ann's I feel like I'm officially qualified to say that I really like this place. The first time I went, I was tagging along and had already eaten dinner, so I just nibbled on some chicken strips and admired the Reuben across the table from me. (That's a sandwich folks, not a person). The chicken strips were good, but what really impressed me was the staff. Everyone was so nice and ready to be your lifelong friend, but not in a clingy way. I sort of felt like we could sit and chat about the good ol' days when we used to play down by the 'crick' catching crawdads. 2nd encounter was strictly pie. Penny Ann's was nice enough to donate pies for our eating enjoying at the August Elite event. They had 3 kinds and were perfectly willing to share full slices of all three, but I got full so only tried the chocolate peanut butter and key lime. YUM. We even ended up with a whole chocolate peanut butter pie afterwards and ate it over the next few days. Yep, I ate pie for a few meals straight. I won the battle with gluttony and parted with a couple of pieces to share with my neighbor. She enjoyed it so much she was anxious to believe that magical unicorns had left it in my fridge. Third time sealed the deal. I stopped by with two friends after a women's meeting downtown. We got there right before they were closing the kitchen but we were treated like family. We ordered two dinners and one piece of pie between the 3 of us. She brought out 3 extra plates without a word from us and let us share the meals family style. We ordered the eggplant dinner and their special that night was a roast beef dinner. The eggplant was cut thinner than I've ever had it and was fancily folded and covered with an amazing sauce. I could hardly believe I was eating eggplant. I LIKE eggplant, but this was something amazing. The cooked zucchini on the side even tasted special. What do you put on zucchini to make it special? I don't know. But it was SO good. The roast beef seemed a tad bit dry, but, there was gravy and it was the end of the evening. The flavor was good. Still loved the key lime pie. Yep, it's officially delicious. The food was good, and seriously not expensive, especially for the care and effort that is put into it. But really my favorite part was feeling like I was part of the family.

a wonderful old fashioned diner. the only caveat are some of the servers. cindy and penny ann [sisters] are great. there used to be an asian guy with long hair who was wonderful as well. the wait people of the past year or so do not impress. at all. we used to walk in and they all knew our names ... now cindy and penny ann do, but the others don't. the others provide perfunctory and not very efficient service. the HEAVENLY HOT CAKES are WONDERFUL. they need to figure out a wait list system on weekends.

Seriously, this place should be on a must try when visiting salt lake for everybody. I love the atmosphere, from the waiters to the customers everyone there seems to be in a happy cheery mood. Even the people waiting to be seated seem to in good spirits. It doesn't stop there, the food is very good! My brother is a biscuits and gravy connoisseur and as of late has been very disappointed in restaurants attempt at such a basic comfort food. But their's, he said, are the 2nd best he's ever had, our mother's being first best of course. The pot of gold is my very favorite and the pie is really something too. But what I truly believe this place will go down in history for is their hot cakes I have never been a fan of plane pancakes. But theirs are the exception. I live in provo and in the last 2 months I have been to salt lake 5 times. For 3 of my 5 visits my first stop has been penny ann's. Seriously try this place out. Great prices. Great food. Great people. What more can you ask for?

My wife noticed Penny Ann's in a local publication and the reviews seemed great so we thought that we would try it out for date night. The location was a bit strange and parking was obnoxious, but the parking situation was remedied when (even though a sign says differently) we realized that we could park in the back. The place was busy and people seemed happy and the food looked great. We were seated within 10 minutes and began to peruse the menu. The menu had a lot of things that sounded great, but we don't often go for the more aggressive dishes until we figure out if a place can make the easy ones good. Turns out Penny Ann's can make the easy ones really good. I got a burger with onion rings, both of which were really tasty. My wife got a Reuben with sweet potato fries and those were really good too. The bread on both was way better than expected. We ordered a few pies, which were very competently prepared, but what I really wanted was a sundae and because there was no hot fudge left at the cafe I opted out. The service was great and we will definitely go back in the future. Everyone should support a place like this because these little cafes are almost a thing of the past.

Came here for lunch today with my coworkers! Place was felt small, cozy, and comfortable! The staff was very nice and friendly. I had a turkey sandwich and tomato basil soup! It was pretty good but I am not a pro at distinguishing great tasting sandwiches. I was told that their pies were good, our waiter told us they were all made in house and delicious. I was too full to get a slice, but next time I definitely need to try it. I would recommend this place! :)

WOW. Great prices and liked the sandwiches a LOT. But the pies here are what REALLY stand out. If you like the flavor combo of chocolate and peanut butter than get their chocolate peanut butter pie. It is seriously my favorite pie ever. I immediately bought a whole pie to take home. The key lime is also amazing...tart without being too tart, and not too sweet like most key lime pies. Great value too...two people can eat here for under $20 if you're on a budget. Gotta love that!

I really enjoyed my Chicken Parm sandwich at Penny Ann's. I didn't get any side dishes because I was saving room for the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. Both were worthy of a repeat. I will be back for breakfast and to try more pie of course. I do wish they would serve breakfast all day though.

Reasons I like Penny Ann's: 1. Small and intimate: this is the kind of atmosphere you have to love- it feels like a family affair even if you're there alone. 2. Onion rings: you know what I like? A good onion ring- which turns out is hard to come by. If you ask for onion rings you'll get a nicely sized bowl + fry sauce. It's likely you'll think you've died. 3. Hot food: everything that was served was piping hot, and all at the same time. 4. Price: it's a good price for good food. You can't argue with that. 5. Pie: You'll be hooked. There I warned you. Eat there and love it forever.

Honestly, I just can't give enough praise this place. We were greeted immediately at the door and told to sit where ever we'd like. No more than a minute later we were greeted by our server who offered us drinks and menus. My husband and I both had coffee and water and had them refilled constantly throughout our visit. We first ordered the Fried Ravioli as an appetizer. Instead of the traditional ricotta filling, it was filled with yummy mozzarella and served with marinara sauce. I ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries and my husband ordered their Reuben sandwich with regular fries. I am quite the fan of buffalo chicken sandwiches and this one tops any I've ever had. They pound, bread, fry and sauce their own chicken breasts. It was just the right amount of spicy (served on a yummy roll with blue cheese dressing.) My husband is very critical when it comes to Reubens and he said this one was the best in town. We took two pieces of pie home, the Amaretto cream and the lemon raspberry cream pie. OMG!!! The pies are the best of the best. Goodbye Marie Callendars! Hello Penny Ann's! Their portions are fairly large which makes up for the fact that it ends up being around $10 a person (without dessert.) The ordering is a little different from what I've seen. You order your entree but if you want a side or a drink it's a little more, but as I said that doesn't really made much of a difference. Entrees are around $7 and for fries and a drink its about $3. The diner has about 8 booths and 10 tables, so it's not very big. The staff (owners) were attentive, kind, and welcoming. I'm certain they will grow out of their current location soon because of how great they are doing. All in all, I can't wait to go back. Oh also, they give a little discount to all their Yelpers! : )

For some reason, on New Year's Day, I was craving a turkey sandwich. I pulled up to Penny Ann's in hopes they would have one on the menu. Fortunately (yes, fortunately) they were only serving breakfast - and that is exactly what I didn't know I wanted. We were happily greeted and told to sit where we liked. I ordered the Breakfast Bowl, and my fiancee ordered the Pots of Gold. Fresh, hot potatoes and eggs smothered in gravy?! YES. I was in heaven. We arrived about 30 minutes prior to them closing for the afternoon, but in no way were we rushed to finish our meal by closing time. The service was excellent, the food amazing. Thank you Penny Ann's for helping me ring in 2013 right!

I'm almost afraid to say this, but I think Moochie's has a run for its money when it comes to Phillys in Utah. I'm serious. The beef was perfectly tender, it came with sauteed onions, bell pepper, and mushrooms, the cheese whiz to rest of the sandwich ratio was spot on, and my goodness, those amoroso rolls are literally the perfect bread to serve phillys on. It's soaks up all of the wonderful meat and cheese juice, yet still retains its integrity and optimal chew factor. Because my philly was so completely satisfying, I'm having a hard time remembering the rest of my meal. I believe I had some sort of soup with either sweet potatoes or squash, that had brown sugar on top of it. It was delicious, but a little difficult to describe in words, you just need to try it. My boyfriend got the lasagna, which was very tasty, but unfortunately, his mother makes the best lasagna ever, so while it may be good, it does not stack up against hers. Service = top notch, it kind of reminded me of when you go into a small down diner and there's a server who knows everyone who comes in by their first name, and you can't help but love her. Unfortunately, I was too full to try out a piece of their famous pies, but I will be returning, especially because the place is more than reasonably priced! Note: If you can, sit on their patio before it gets cold, because this is perfect outdoor eating weather. Also, it's located at the bottom of the Terrace Apartments, where Pho Tay Ho was before they relocated down the street.

I really enjoyed eating at Penny Ann's! The reuben was delicious, and the sweet potato fries were crisp and fresh. We went there with friends and had a really great time. The food is diner food, with no frills, but that's what we like.

I ate here today after hearing some good feedback on the food. I am always in search of a great traditional cheese steak, so I ordered that. Waited about 13 minutes which was good. They menu stated the Steak was on an amoroso roll and they offered cheese wiz (YES). The Steak used is an angus beef choice (I prefer ribeye), The steak was cooked perfect, the mushrooms, onions, and green peppers were cooked great. Being picky, I didn't like the cheese wiz between the roll and steak (needs to be on steak or will soggy the bread). great food the place is a little small and privacy is tough to come by. i would rate this 4.5 but the stars wont do halves. Altogether a great local place with great food.

Stopped in here on a Saturday AM. We got the last table. We weren't greeted in what I would consider an acceptable amount of time, but once things got going, the service was very good. I had an omelette, which was prepared perfectly, along with the home fries and pancakes. My usual complaint, zero seasoning. My daughter had the kid's egg breakfast which was also prepared well.

Food: 4 stars Wait staff: 4.5 stars Restaurant: 3 stars Dining Experience 3.5 stars The food was great! Their sweet potato fries are so addicting, I could have cleaned my plate if I let myself. I had their grilled cheese, not too many complaints there. My coworkers had the buffalo chicken sandwich, the sidewinder and rueben sandwiches. They liked them very much, especially the buffalo chicken. It's great diner food, the sandwiches looked great and the fries were well seasoned. And it comes with a pickle! Can't beat that! And the prices were more than fair, especially considering their portions and comparing other diners around town. Our server was very nice. She kept our drinks full and was very pleasant. The restaurant was ok, a little cramped. Our chairs were a bit sticky. The bathroom was disgusting. They had a flat panel tv playing sports, which is always nice. The food was great, the server was nice, but we waited approximately 45 minutes for our food. We were all starving by the time we got our food and inhaled it! I'd probably go back to try their pie, I was too full this time around. But I noticed a few other people who ordered a slice of pie and it looked really good. I'd be interested in their breakfast menu too. Overall, I'll probably go back, I will just make sure I have ample time to enjoy the complete dining experience.

I like breakfast and I REALLY like breakfast at this little place. It's very reasonably priced for the quantity and quality of food. If there was a down side, it was that the hot chocolate wasn't quite chocolaty enough for me, but as soon as my food came I honestly forgot the drinks beside my plates even existed. Their hot cakes are amazing! These are not the normal pancakes that you are sick of after 3 bites, but more like a breakfast gem that belongs at the center of the meal instead of as the "side dish". Yum to Penny Ann's!

I FINALLY DID IT!! I had breakfast at Penny Anne Cafe. I have always enjoyed their lunch menu, but breakfast here is a great new experience. I ordered the corned beef hash, with "Heavenly Hot Cakes". The hash and.eggs were well prepared and hot. However the hot cakes are elevated to a whple new level. No syrup was needed and the taste and texture are very pleasing. Please come and ENJOY!!

Maybe I'm missing something, maybe my first experience was a fluke, but I gave Penny Ann's 3 stars after dining there yesterday and being fairly satisfied. Of course I followed the guidance of my fellow Yelpers and based our visit off the stellar reviews this place got. We arrived and realized it was pretty much connected to the Terrace Apartments. My brain immediately flashed back to a time when I was searching for places to live in town, and the horrible reviews and sketchy stories I had been told about those certain apartments. Now this didn't deter me from walking in open minded about our lunch, I was really looking forward to a great meal and experience. My husband and I walked inside, it was very quaint and small. The main dining area had only a few tables taken, but we opted for a booth in the back where there were a couple tables with some gentlemen seated in two of the 4 available. I needed to wash up since I had clay remnants on my hands from a pottery class we had just left, so I approached the register and asked where the restroom was. I was given a a key and told it was down the hall on the right. No big deal, I walked to the bathroom did my thing and when I returned the booth behind us had been taken by two new gentlemen. One had his arm relaxingly tossed over onto my side and I excused myself as I sat, hoping he would move his arm, but didn't, so I squeezed my way in and immediately was hit with a horrible smell. It was a lovely mixture of urine, cigarette smoke, b.o., and wet dog. I'm trying hard to not make this review about the people around me at the time I was eating, but my experience was directly effected by them. They were, without sugar coating it, pretty much hobos. Their subject matter of discussion was loud and unmentionable on here, but a lot of cussing and unfiltered things I didn't really want to hear. I am not a saint, I love to swear and I have been known to talk about questionable things during a meal, but I am always mindful of people around me. Now true, I could have moved tables, but I decided to stick it out and just hope the food made up for it. I ordered the Reuben with the soup of the day which was a broccoli cream, and a slice of amaretto cream pie. My husband got a slice of coconut cream pie and we both had a Dr. Pepper to drink. The server wasn't really very friendly, she seemed bothered when I asked about house made things and was pretty abrupt. My Reuben was good, not the best ever, but it did hit the spot. I felt like there wasn't enough meat in the sandwich, but the sauerkraut wasn't too powerful which I can appreciate. I asked if the thousand island dressing was house made when I ordered, I was told yes, but I honestly wasn't blown away by it. The soup was just as expected, very tasty for sure. The pie was pretty fantastic, it was silky, sweet, very lovely all around. I tasted a few bites of my husbands coconut pie it was delicious as well. I asked him from a scale of 1 to 5 what he would rate it he said it was a 4. We walked away paying just under $17.00 so we were happy as far as pricing went. We felt it was fair and the portions were good enough. I think the only reason I want to go back is for a delicious looking banana split one of the sketchy dudes had, and maybe for a shake.

When I think breakfast, I think pancakes. And when I think pancakes, my go-to place is Penny Ann's Cafe. The pancakes are tender, flavorful, and don't need anything other than syrup to make them shine. There's nothing added to them that takes away from the great flavor. And the pancakes are just a side that come with the Penny Pot Potatoes--also a fantastic part of my breakfast. The potatoes are crispy on the outside, tender in the middle and are accompanied with bacon, sausage, green peppers, and onions. If you're there for lunch, they also have a good selection. I miss their pork tenderloin sandwich, but they other offerings are also delish. You want a treat? Yeah, their pies are a great way to end a meal. And yes, I've had a slice after breakfast. I take my daughter and she feels right at home. She loves to eat at the counter and get the diner experience. Overall, Penny Ann's is a great place to eat and is a regular stop for me.

I have to state that I didn't actually eat at Penny Ann's Cafe, but this is only because the staff had no interest in serving me. I was so excited to try this place after seeing all the great reviews; my husband and I stopped in for a late lunch, it was busy, but not crazy busy. We weren't sure if we should seat ourselves or not, and after a few minutes of standing there idiotically and being ignored by the waiters a man who didn't appear to even work there told us to sit at the table right next to the front door. Well, it was really cold outside so it was pretty unappealing to sit by a drafty door, but we sat there anyway. Then we continued to sit there for 15 minutes without even so much as a hello, menu, or visual acknowledgment that we existed, so we left without eating.

I gotta say... this place is a gem. The hot cakes are the best in town. The service was excellent... AND ZERO wait time for breakfast. Bottomless coffee (I wish it was bottomless mimosas-- no liquor license, though!) GO HERE. It is really good.

I can't believe I haven't written a review for Penny Ann's! We came here on a Friday night and fell in love with the place...great ambience, awesome classic tunes playing, terrific service, and oh the food! So many tasty options located in an unassuming place-- it seems improbable..and yet here we have this little gem. The owner is so cool...he could be anyone's father or grandfather. He always comes around to make sure you're enjoying yourself. He's definitely proud of his business and he has every right to be...because the food is terrific and his people are just as awesome. The first time we came here I had the Philly Cheesesteak. Oh yeah...this is what I thought Moochie's should've been like! The Amoroso roll...so tasty and fresh...great meat and provolone and veggies. It was awesome. The sweet potato fries were also pretty tasty. Because of all of the rave Yelp reviews I tried the chocolate peanut butter pie. I was reluctant. As much as I love the combination, I just wasn't sure it could work in pie form. I was wrong. It works very well. The peanut butter filling is light and fluffy and not cloyingly sweet and sticky. The chocolate was dark, rich and the perfect counterpoint to the peanut butter. I was shocked and insisted Craig try a bite...and he really liked it as well. I've had some of their other pies and they were all equally impressive. I really don't know whether I like their pie or Left Fork Grill's pie better. I want a pie throwdown! The homemade pasta was toothsome and delectable. I ordered the spaghetti and meatballs and although the sauce was rather weak, the pasta and meatballs made up for it. I spiced up the sauce when I had leftovers the next day-- hey, not everyone can make pasta sauce as well as I do...but the pasta...well I just can't do that (yet). Yes we will be back again and again...because a place like this needs to be around for a very long time.

Finally got out to try this place! Had tasted the pie before several times and was blown away by that. Kept telling my boss we needed to go here for or monthly breakfast meeting and he finally gave in. Everything was so so good. The pancakes are absolutely heavenly and I usually don't like pancakes very much. I didn't get the chance to try the biscuits and gravy, but several of my coworkers did and they all raved about them. The prices are unbeatable for the quality and taste. When we got the check my boss.thought they'd forgotten to charge us for something because he'd never spent so little for 11 people. :) Can't wait to return!!!

We went here for lunch after reading all the great reviews on Yelp - and the reviews are right. Penny Ann's serves up seriously tasty diner food. The pork tenderloin sandwich had an oversized, crispy-breaded piece of tenderloin just like the ones my wife grew up on back in Illinois. My chicken parm sub was just right: not overloaded with sauce, and served on a chewy Amoroso roll. Can't wait to come back and try one of their Philly cheese steaks - I think they'll get it right. Fries and onion rings were also crisp, hot, and delicious. And then there's dessert. That chocolate peanut butter pie all the reviews mention? It's horrible. Stay away from it. Same with the key lime: don't eat it. These pies are clearly NOT the creamy, sweet expression of perfect pie awesomeness, so you should just avoid them. That's right. Just back away from the pies, and leave them so that I can eat them all - What? Huh? You heard nothing. This place will make a ninja pie thief out of anyone, I swear!

Penny Ann's is a great option if you are in the Salt Lake area - its more than worth the drive even if you aren't anywhere near the Salt Lake area. It is run by a family from Back East and you can taste their love for great home-cooking in every bite.I have never been disappointed at Penny Ann's. Service: They take great care of you and are very attentive. It is not uncommon to see the Father coming around making sure everything is just to your liking. Food: Absolutely delicious. The first thing I tried at Penny Ann's was the Reuben with sweet potato fries. The Reuben is served perfectly toasted on Rye, and is probably the best I have had. The sweet potato fries are crisp and tasty. I have tried other dishes (Fish&Chips, Chicken Parm, etc...) and they are all great as well. The pie is out of this world - but be warned - they are made fresh daily from scratch and I've visited a couple of times to find my favorite (Peanut Butter Chocolate) sold out. "Feel": Penny Ann's has a great ambiance, and a fun diner feel. It is in a completely unassuming location underneath an apartment complex so you have to be looking to see it. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions are huge. It is a great value. This family runs a great restaurant and you'll be happy you gave it a try.

The food, service is exceptional here. Just don't go on Friday's as the best waitress (one of the daughters, is not working and two stoners are) The friendly staff and homemade to order food is why you should come here. The two young men spend more time watching sportscenter than seeing that you dining needs are met. I really look forward to coming here to eat the Reuben is awesome but trying new items weekly and not disappointed.

Wanna have the perfect lunch? Get the Reuben (straightforward and outstanding) and then the good-as-Florida's-got Key Lime pie for dessert. So damn delicious. The pie was so good the first time I tried it (best key lime I've had anywhere) that I bought an entire pie (a good deal at $15 + tax) and brought it to a dinner party and the reviews/raves were unanimous: Awesome. Bring one to your next potluck and you'll be the hit of the party.

We love Penny Ann's. I read about them in the Tribune back in Oct. 2011 and so decided to check them out. They are a small place so sometimes getting a table is a little tricky. Service is always good and they serve classic American food like burgers and sandwiches. It is a very limited menu but that is not always a bad thing. The thing to really check out at Penny Ann's is the pies. They make a selection each day and it is not uncommon for some of the more popular flavors to sell out by dinner. Check them out. Well worth it.

Went to Penny Ann's for the first time because of a groupon and boy am I glad we did! First on a Friday night, it was packed but it didn't feel crowded. There were only 2 open tables, but we were seated right away. We loved the ambiance--classic American diner. L-O-V-E-D that there wasn't any piped in music blaring so loud that we couldn't have a decent conversation! We were so impressed! We've been searching for a "typical American place" to take my Australian cousins to when they come visit next month. We will definitely be going to Penny Ann's! The food was scrumptious! My husband isn't that daring when trying a new place and he got a double cheese burger. This is no McDonald's hamburger folks! It was huge, hand made, delicious!! The fries were crispy on the outside, hot and soft on the inside--and don't even get me started on the sweet potato fries!! YUM!!! I ordered the Fish and Chips. Just thinking about that fish is making my mouth water. It was perfection! Didn't order any pie because we saw the advertisement for the Pi-day Party (and were thus introduced to YELP!) and sampled them there. Let me just say, I can't wait to go back to Penny Ann's just so I can have more of that oreo deliciousness! Well done Penny Ann's! You've got me hooked!

I keep coming back to Penny Ann's. They have THE BEST breakfast. I'm practically in love. I want to find a way into the family just to enjoy this place more often. The family atmosphere is warm and inviting. I love the older gentleman, Wayne. He's the dad and their official "taster". He's funny. You can tell that he loves working with his family. I've been served by several of the servers. They are all so amazing. I've only had 1 that I'm not a fan of, but other then that it's an amazing staff. The wait can sometimes take a while, but it's always worth it. Those heavenly hotcakes are truly amazing. They are so light and fluffy, and full of flavor. I don't even like pancakes, but I crave these things. I've also now tried their breakfast nachos. Sounds weird, taste amazing. I really only have great things to say about this place. I wish they were closer to my home, but I'm more than willing to drive for their amazing breakfast.

Food is very over rated. I could taste the cheapness in their ingredients. Also staff was eating while serving tables at the same time which is gross. Our server was slow and unorganized.

Mmmmm......sour cream pancakes...bliss! Hubby got the Penny Pot and I got the Big Breakfast, both loads of food and both were great. BUT....I felt guilty the whole time, I felt I wasn't giving my pancakes the attention they deserved. The pancakes were so amazing that I recommend skipping the syrup altogether, going light on the butter, and just enjoy them in their naked glory. Next time we go I'm just getting pancakes so I can focus on what's important.

I was told about this little gem from a friend that said it was really good food. I drove up and wasn't sure what to think by the exterior (attached to an apt complex) but never shy away from a good recommendation. The menu is super affordable, the portions are large, and the taste is fantastic! I had the Pot Potatoes with the Heavenly sour cream pancakes. I don't think I can order pancakes from anywhere else anymore...they are that good!

After meeting the VERY friendly staff and family who run Penny Ann's Cafe at a Yelp Event, I was very eager to give them a try. First, lets talk location. Very easy to find. However, in my opinion, I feel like it takes away of what they could be. Its actually physically attached to an apartment complex and I felt like it did give it a more diner/ I just checked into the motel for the weekend feel. Is that a bad thing, well no, but it is distracting. We sat out on the patio, which is right on Main St. You get the traffic from the street, but also from renters going in and out. People watching however, can be quite fun. Second, lets talk food. The owners of Penny Ann's must be thieves. I am convinced they must be stealing their food because it is so cheap. They must expensive item I say on the menu was $7.99 and I ordered it. We went for dinner and had mozzarella sticks as an app, chicken parmesan sandwich, and chicken marsala plate. Chicken on both plates were delightful, tender, juicy, flavorful. Fettucini was cooked just right and the marsala flavor was not my favorite, but thats just an issue with my tastebuds, not with how Penny Ann's makes it. Chicken Parmesan was the favorite and the amoroso roll was outstanding. Can I buy those for my next family picnic? Pie. Chocolate peanut butter. Yum. My favorite. Smooth, my tastebuds were dancing in delight of the delicious taste. Also tried banana cream and key lime. I am not key lime guy but others there were ranting and raving. Banana cream was about what I am expected, great choice if thats what you are in the mood for. Remember, Monday is key for Pie Day. Third, service. Great little place with great service. Like another reviewer said, it does make you feel like home. Very personable, on top of getting you water, providing recommendations/favorites. You leave feeling like you'll be back soon. I gave this place three stars for what it is. Its not the best of the best nor is it saying it is, its not in a ritzy part of town, its not a complex menu. Expect an apartment next door, expect a "diner esque"(@jeffrey s) feel, expect a restaurant that is still growing up.The cliche line, it is what is. If you want friendly service, great tasting food made to order food and low prices that really could/should be higher, come here.

So far I can only comment on the pie, which I was able to taste last night at a Pi Day party. Lemon with raspberry sauce, peanut butter chocolate, key lime and last but not least, oreo pie. All were spectacular. Creamy without being overpoweringly rich, sweet but didn't taste like a mouthful of sugar. And the crusts were perfect. If these pies are any indication of the overall quality of their food, my husband and I will definitely be eating here soon.

Fantastic breakfast. Perfect pancakes, excellent biscuits and gravy, yummy potatoes. Top it off with great service and you feel like you are really getting a true homecooked meal in someone's home. Definitely a fan.

I love pie. Scratch that, I adore pie. If pies were readily available for adoption, I would adopt all of the pies of the world and snuggle with them late at night watching The Food Network (Key lime is a notorious Paula fan, but Banana cream loves Guy). But I'm getting ahead of myself. Even though I love pie, I also am a discerning critic, and although I have had some memorable pies in my time, I met the love of my pie life at Penny Ann's Cafe yesterday afternoon, and over 24 hours later, I am still floating on cloud nine. I am from Phoenix, Arizona, but I come to Salt Lake City often to visit family. After reading rave reviews about this charming little cafe right here on Yelp, we decided to venture over to the cafe for a tasty lunch. The restaurant was jam-packed when we arrived, but our waiter was incredibly kind and accommodating, so we didn't mind waiting. Once we were finally seated, the service was fantastic--our waiter apologized sincerely for the wait, and made sure that we were well taken care of, all with a pleasant demeanor and a nice smile. Everything on the menu looked delicious, and we struggled to pick just one thing to order. My dad and I finally decided upon the Philly cheese steak sandwich with cheez whiz (best decision of my life), and my mom chose the highly recommended reuben. We also got sweet potato fries and onion rings to share. The food came out quickly, and we were anything but disappointed. Whoever made the Philly cheese steak back in the kitchen should be an Iron Chef--the sandwich wasn't too dry as they often are, and it felt homey and authentic. What we loved so much about the food was that it felt as though it were infused with love. Cheesy, I know, but true. My mom also gave rave reviews of her reuben sandwich, which had the perfect ratio of meat to sauerkraut, and the bread was perfectly toasty. The fries and onion rings (with Utah fry sauce, no less) were also to die for. Even though we were stuffed to the brim, we decided to try two of the pies, the key lime pie and the chocolate peanut butter. My grandmother said that the key lime was better than sex, and the chocolate peanut butter still makes my mouth water whenever I think about it. All in all, a fantastic Utah find. Excellent service, excellent atmosphere, and perfect food.

Went to Penny Ann's a little while back (when it was warm enough to sit outside!). had the best sweet potato fries (which came a couple mins late - but they made it up but giving us extra fries!) and Philly cheese steak. The waitress was great - I am a big sauce girl, and she took out 3 different sauces for us to use (and they are all home-made, too!). We were also lucky enough to meet the owner herself, the cutest lady ever (I assumed she is Penny Ann?) - who sat and chatted with us for a little bit, wish we had room to try some of her homemade pie... next time!

I wish I knew about this diner before! Such a hidden gem downtown, close to home, super awesome prices and a killer garlic burger. I went on Pi night, and tried 3 kinds.. I wanted to pop when I got home. Banana cream had the best flavor, but was too pudding-ish for my liking. The berry crumble was ok, but needs a glass of milk to swallow. The key lime was sweet and tart and creamy, probably what I will order time and time again as I power thru their menu. I'm excited to try them for breakfast. Maybe I came on a bad night, with loud kids everywhere and it took 40 minutes to get my burger. I did walk in 30 minutes before closing, so maybe that's on me anyway. But I asked for my pie first so that I could try them out while I waited, and not have to be in their hair while closing. She must've forgot, and brought it out with my burger. So I sat and ate while they vacuumed the restaurant. A little tacky, but what can you do? I still give them 4 stars.

With all the hyperbole about this place it is only average. I find this a fact because the diners in SLC. don't know what good food is. It's not bad but it's not anything to write home about. Belive it or not Applebees has a better Ruben Take a trip to any city that has a real deli and you will find what I mean. Sorry it's not that good.

Amazingly good, simple home cooking, great service, reasonable prices. Their French toast with a side of bacon is one of my most favorite breakfasts ever. The only downside to this place is that they no longer serve dinner.

My family and I ate lunch today. My husband and I shared a sandwich, they even put the food on a separate plate and split the fries. I couldn't even finish my food. Food was great. Just wish I had room for pie. Prices are very good. Drinks are huge. They check on you to make sure everything was good. It was AWESOME. Besides I have the same and middle name.

We went to Penny Ann's and had a lovely dining experience. We waited for a seat on the patio, which was well worth it. We were seated by this lovely lady who I thought might be Penny Ann herself...I was close...it was her cute little mother. We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, the California Ciabatta, and the Italian Pig in a Blanket. Everything was absolutely wonderful. The turkey on the ciabatta was piled high and tasted like it was freshly oven roasted. It was definitely not your average deli meat. Penny Ann herself was our server and she suggested some ranch on the ciabatta which was a lovely addition to the sandwich. They also have sweet potato fries which is always a big seller to our decision on where to eat, so that just added to the pleasure of our meal. I enjoy having good interaction with whomever my server is and Penny Ann was a delightful bit of energy. She has ALMOST as quick of a wit as I do, so it was a good match :) We will definitely become regulars at this cute little restaurant. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was equally enjoyable. Thanks for a great lunch!

I am extremely disappointed in the service of Penny Ann's by Penny Ann herself. Everyone else has always been so nice every single time I hace gone with my family and I have been going about twice a week for months. Unfortunately, when you taste pancakes that you go to Penny Ann's for and they taste nothing like they normally do and you send it back in hopes you get new ones that arent cold, and taste like the amazing pancakes theu should be Penny Ann comes back and says we can make you something else but we will not make you new pancakes because they are all the same. So she hands me the pancakes that I sent back. She was so incredibly rude about it and basically calling me a liar when I said they didn't taste the same. I loved this placr every single time, I get my family up. Every weekend to drive a half hour just for this breakfast. How is it possible that through all the service we have given them and recommendations we have given they could not bring me new pancakes? I couldn't believe it. Be aware.. if yiu send something back you will get brought the same ones you sent back because Penny Ann is not about customer service at all. I hate to write this review because the food is fantastic but I was so disappointed in how it was handled.

I just love Penny Ann's Cafe, their staff is friendly and so willing to please. We've taken friends there who love it too. I'm really picky about how my eggs are cooked and they do a great job and it comes just like I order it. Their biscuit and gravy is the "bomb" and their corn beef hash is cooked just right. We also love their Reuben Sandwich and onion rings, you just can't go wrong no matter what you order. The PIE is the best! If you don't have room after the meal remember to take a piece home. their coffee is their own blend and done really well, always served at the perfect temperature and has that just brewed taste to it.

I'm so happy I found this place while simultaneously angry at myself for not discovering it sooner. Coming from the east coast, I frequently get cravings for some east coast style sandwich and fries action, and Penny Ann's is the perfect spot. Staff is very friendly, helpful, and attentive. I've only had the cheesesteak as far as sandwiches go, but why stray from that? House cooked thinly shaved steak on an Amoroso roll (straight out of philly!) coated in cheese whiz! THANK GOD THEY HAVE CHEESE WHIZ. When I want a cheesesteak or some cheese fries, I don't want real genuine cheese melted all over the top, I want that orange liquid goodness spilling into every nook and cranny. Wash it all down with a Dr. Pepper in a giant red glass and I'm a happy lady. Was pretty full after the cheesesteak so I took a slice of banana cream pie to go (which I inhaled about an hour after returning home), and holy crap that was just as delicious. Appetizer, huge sandwiches with fries, pie, and soda for 2 came to a very reasonable $30. I will definitely be back!

My partner and I have been to Penny Ann's Cafe a few times, this time was one of the most disappointing experiences that we have had. The service was poor right from the start. The owners mother was sitting the customer that morning When we asked if we could sit at a 4 top instead of the two top by the door, she was not a happy camper. I would say that the placement of the tables in the restaurant lack planning. It started to get busy that morning and the only tables that were left had signs on them that stated that they are reserved for parties of 4 or more, so the customers ttat were parties of three could not sit there. We just felt that the service has gone downhill as well as the food. It took 10 minutes to get our order place, then it took about 20 minutes for the food to be delivered. We were never offered a refill on our coffee, even thou Penny Ann came by with the pot a few times. She only offered coffee to her customers. Her mother could have passed the coffee around, but God forbid that she could do two things at once. My only positive comment is that we would probably not be returning there anytime soon.

I usually don't love breakfast diners because I feel like I can make eggs and toast at home just as well. I was very impressed with the food at Penny Ann's. The pancakes were amazing and light, and the fried scone was fabulous! We travel to Park City once a year, so we stop in Salt Lake for breakfast on the way to the airport. We will be back to Penny Ann's to taste the pie.

I went early on a Tuesday morning. Not too busy yet. I had excellent service from three very nice waitresses. I never could get a sip out of my coffee before it was filled again. The bacon and eggs were great and the pancakes were delicious. We (other customers and the waitresses) had a long discussion about the jerks who posted the not baby friendly review. The people in this restaurant are more than accommodating and will bend over backwards to meet requests. I don't think they like snotty, me now, parents though. Self absorbed narcissistic people with infants have the ability to ruin a nice meal for everyone in the restaurant. If you want to go out to breakfast on Sunday morning, leave the infants at home or go to Chucky Cheese.

Very good breakfast! I had the eggs Benedict and substituted the pancakes out and OF COURSE and got the French Toast, because I knew that I could swipe some of their Famous pancakes from one of my family members (and I did :-) Everything was great! We will be back! PS my husband and daughter LOVED the boysenberry syrup.

Fantastic! We needed to wait on a Sunday morning/afternoon, but were given a pager so we could take a stroll while we waited. Wait was shorter than expected! Fantastic service. The food portions are enormous and delicious. Breakfast bowl was a great value. Corned beef omelette was also excellent. I'll definitely be back!!

If you ever find yourself in Salt Lake and want a nice locals' breakfast spot, with delicious, hearty portions to cozy up to, Penny Ann's is your ticket. Immediately put your name on the list, though. Yes, there will be a wait, but it's modest as tables seem to become available every few minutes. As other reviewers have noted, it's very neighborhood-y, providing both a casual and relaxing ambiance that will surely appeal to most. Don't expect any trendy fare at Penny Ann's, meaning you're not going to find a menu sporting 100 ways and flavors to do French toast or pancakes(like some of those other culprits here in San Diego). Pancakes and eggs were definitely on my agenda during my visit. I opted, therefore, for the Washington Omelet, constructed with bacon, ham, sausage and cheese (I chose pepper jack). In addition to my Washington, I also asked for a short stack of their "Heavenly Hotcakes" and a side of sourdough toast, my normal habit. Their hotcakes are made with sour cream, thereby making them extremely moist and light. My breakfast companion and I both were impressed with them. He had the Pot of Gold, which was basically a large scramble mixed with a variety of meats and potatoes, topped with a generous amount of sausage gravy. Oh, and service? Really efficient. Our waitress was an absolute doll. Penny Ann's was a welcomed indulgence after a lot of early morning activity.

This family owned breakfast joint sure hits the spot. Whether you're in the mood for savory or sweet, they've got you covered. I really liked the Pot Of Gold and the BAM waffle. Portions are really big... I only ate a quarter of my plate before I was full.

Had a friend take me to his favorite breakfast place in SLC and we've arrived at Penny Ann's. Pretty busy place but that's expected at a popular breakfast place on a Sunday. Customer service was great, especially our server. Collectively our table ordered corn beef hash, pot of gold and the breakfast nachos. Everything was delicious based on individual reviews. Also we all got the side of "heavenly hot cakes," which are their exceptional pancakes. They were fluffy to perfection. Absolutely delicious. We didn't upgrade to the Vermont syrup because the syrup provided was already delicious. The cherry on top was that the coffee was especially delicious. The waiter told us it was called the "Olympus" blend.

Awesome place. I loved the potatoes. Perfection. I had the Benedict. I customized it and swapped the ham for avocado. Wonderful. The hollandaise is fresh and not from a packet mix. I was in heaven with every bite. Hubby got the pot of gold with Pancakes. It was also very good. Customer service was top knotch. We will be back. We have to try the hash next.

I'm an out of towner. It's rare to have time to sit back and enjoy a good breakfast so I always try to find the best local food I can. I am pretty sure I'm Salt Lake City it doesn't get much better than Penny Ann's. First off, I do not think it is not a child friendly place (per previous reviews). In fact most people coming in had small children and the staff was quick to accommodate them. Anyways, I walked in and was greeted right away and sat down. I was immediately brought water and I received my coffee quick. The mug here was always full. If my server didn't top it off, the others did. My server was incredibly outgoing and friendly. He suggested the Pot of Gold and Pancake. I am glad he did. The pancakes were light, fluffy, and (as advertised) "heavenly". DO NOT put syrup on your first bite. Try the actual pancake first it's incredible. The pot of gold is basically everything they have smothered in gravy. Great for a cheat meal. Everything was cooked perfectly, and all melded together into one harmonious piece of art. I am a big guy and can eat a lot, but I brought the pot of gold home for a mid afternoon rendezvous. And finally, their coffee is incredible. Perfect roast and perfect brew. Plus the atmosphere is really cool and laid back. Everything you want in a small cafe. Definitely wish we had one where I live and hope to get back soon!

This was an interesting find on the way to the SLC Airport. A hole in the wall, in the bottom of an old apartment complex. Service was friendly enough, but SLOW. Don't think I've ever been to a breakfast place that took quite so long to get the food out. Bathroom situation was a bit strange. It was outside of the restaurant in the lobby of the apartment building and was locked. At least it was clean! We had the PAC BAM waffle and the Big Breakfast. It was a decent amount of food- the price on the Big Breakfast was probably fair, but the waffle may have been a bit over priced. I thought the waffle was very good, with large chunks of bacon in it! Bacon slices were also good, as were the breakfast potatoes. Ham was very good, eggs, sausage and hot cakes were "fine."

Penny Ann's is easily one of my favorite breakfast spots in SLC. Their dishes are always spot on and the heavenly hot cakes are truly amazing! Like other yelpers have noted, there is always a wait but the tables turn over quickly. Or, skip the line and get your food to go like me and the hubby. We live close enough to place our order, get it back to the house, and put it on the plate while are dishes are still piping hot. Now yelper friends, I haven't told you anything you don't already know about Penny Ann's but now I'm going to let you in on somewhat of a secrete (for those of you still reading get ready for the pay off). Don't mess around with their fruit or chocolate pies. Yes they are delicious, but (and this is a big but) their best pie is the coconut cashew white chocolate chip. It is THE BEST. My hubby is not a sweets fan, and even he cannot resist this pie. If you hate coconut and white chocolate chip, then all I have to say is more pie for me. But if you even think you may like these ingredients, try this pie. It is worth every calorie and will leave your sweet tooth completely satisfied.

Update Feb 2015- they now serve breakfast all day everyday. So I have upped the rating from 3 stars to 4. ------------- Breakfast only before 11am on weekdays! I was hoping for a breakfast during UEA week but unfortunately Penny Ann's only serves breakfast 'all day' during the weekends. Bummer. So my party and I tried the lunch menu. We sampled Burgers, Sidewinder Sandwich, and the Club Sandwich... All were passable I suppose. The Sidewinder was a bit dry and could really use a cup of au jus or horseradish or something. Burgers are decent. The club could use some more bacon. Fries were great, especially the 50/50 fries (half sweet potato and half regular fries). Of course, pies are amazing and I love the patio dining. In sum, I think I will only return to this place on the weekends for their breakfast. Lunch is nothing special.

This is all I have to say about this place. I've been in SLC 39 years and this is the only place I've waited to eat more then 15 minutes. It only seats 54 at the Main St location and it was well worth the wait. I've been trying to work my way through their PAC 12 omelette selection.

We came to Penny Ann's Cafe for breakfast last week, and it definitely lived up to the hype! Our party was seated immediately, and a waitress came right to the table to bring us water and answer any questions we had about the menu. I ordered a pork chile verde skillet. The accompanying pancakes came out first, and they were light, fluffy, and delicious. The skillet was amazing -- their chile verde was so good! A lot going on on my plate, which was huge, and I couldn't finish it all, but enjoyed every bite. Their breakfast menu is vast, and I really hope to make it back to try out a few more items. The one downside to our meal was that my vegetarian cousin ordered a vegetarian item that came out with a few pieces of meat in it. Because this isn't a vegetarian restaurant, and mistakes are bound to happen (also I'm not vegetarian and probably can't fully comprehend the frustration of eating out with omnivores), I can't fault Penny Ann's too much. If you haven't been yet (I think I'm the last one), go. Penny Ann's Cafe is a perfect breakfast spot in a great SLC location.

Driving though SLC and stopped for breakfast. One of the best breakfast spots I have been too. The whole staff is very friendly and can strike up and conversation. The pancakes are as good as they say, very very tasty. You get a lot of food for a really good price. I usually can eat a lot of food and was unable to finish all my food. They are very generous on the coffee, they made sure you were topped off and even filled my to go cup. I would recommend this to anyone who is in SLC or traveling through. Nice dining area inside and a great outside patio to enjoy the morning. Wish I lived closer.

This review is a replacement of my previous unenlightened, and arguably moronic, three-star review of Penny Ann's. Straight up, this place serves what diner grub is meant to be; big, loud, boisterous, and utterly delicious. Experiencing their Heavenly Hotcakes is certainly the closest I'll ever get to the Celestial Kingdom. The Pot of Gold is a wonderful melange of potatoes, onion, peppers, mushrooms, and eggs, all covered in hot sausage gravy. I consider it a masterpiece. The biscuits and gravy are stellar. I think they changed their biscuit recipe. They are taller and denser than in the past. Oh, man. I love the way they fold their omelets, clearly cooked on a large flattop. And they are huge and well stuffed. Service has been amazing, and I've warmed up to the cramped space. Penny Ann's also serves the best diner coffee in the valley. I have had a couple of lunch items, including the Philly. Sorry, it doesn't compare to Moochie's, or even DP. But for breakfast, you simply cannot do better.

Got the breakfast nachos here. I was a little skeptical because I have never heard of a dish like this. It was absolutely amazing! The eggs were cooked just right, the homemade fried tortilla chips were light and crispy, the pork chile verde was filled with flavor, and it was all topped off with my favorite cheddar cheese and sour cream. DELICIOUS! It also came with a side of their to-die-for hot cakes. DO NOT GET THE TOAST (even though I heard it's really good) because you're missing out on pancakes that are heavenly delicious!! I was too full to try the pies (darn!) maybe next time, because I'll for sure be coming back for more!

Popular place. not a cookie-cutter chain restaurant where the staff hates their jobs. Great breakfast, and I love the pie!

We came here for Sunday brunch and it was a 25 minute wait for two people. Once we were seated, we ordered the 2 Egg Breakfast and the Penny Pot Potatoes. The 2 Egg Breakfast came with 2 eggs, fried potatoes and toast or "Heavenly Hot Cakes". I was wanting a light breakfast so the 2 Egg Breakfast was perfect even though the portions looked small on the plate. The "Heavenly Hot Cakes" are fluffy, delicious and filling. I had a few bites of my cousin's Penny Pot Potatoes and it was good but I like Park Cafe's Michigan Hash better. This is not the best breakfast/brunch spot that I've been to but I would definitely come back because of the affordable prices and "Heavenly Hot Cakes".

Great brunch! The only problem is that it is so good, it is always packed. Nice, friendly staff. Great food! I definitely want to go back, I just hate how busy it is.

Move over Joe, I have found my favorite pancakes in the world! Penny Ann's has the most delicious, buttery, moist sour cream pancakes I've ever had! I could eat them as is or with a side of love (pecan and caramel)! Some "Yelpers" have complained about the interior decor and to me it really doesn't matter when you're eating the best pancake! My husband and I have also had the Ruben and the Philly steak sandwiches! Don't forget to try the raspberry lemon pie! (If you sign up for their email club you can get free pie once in a while!)

I got the Big Breakfast. Everything you want in a breakfast. Eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, toast, potatoes and hot cakes. The Hot Cakes were absolutely the best I've ever had. That is saying a lot. The potatoes needed ketchup, but everything else was cooked perfectly. The sausage and bacon were both very flavorful. They also have wifi! Great Job PAC! I'll be back.

I came here for my birthday and it was memorable. I don't like pancakes but when I do it's from here!! I've never had such perfect hot cakes in my entire life! I got the PAC Benedict which was also amazing. The staff is nice, intimate place, and the food was comforting. Totally recommend this place!!

very good! a small neighborhood place. the food doesn't look all pretty and almost looks like 1970s breakfast. but don't let that deceive you about the taste. i had the pot of gold. basically everything with fried potatoes with gravy dumped all over it. it was very hearty and rich. the pancakes were very good.

All you really need to order is the HEAVENLY HOTCAKES to share with everyone. I am gluten-free and didn't eat those heavenly cakes. There are so many other great gluten-free items on the menu that there is something for everyone here. Everything we got was yummy and very affordable but definitely not a "light" meal...lots of pan/skillet fried things with cheese or sauces. Not that there's anything wrong with that every now and then. We happened to stop by on St. Patricks Day and the servers were all decked out in green and clovers. They looked like they were having a great time, which translated into a great meal for us. Pork chili verde skillet was great (which came with hotcakes) $7.99: yelp.com/biz_photos/penn… Penny Pot skillet was also very good too (which also came with hotcakes) $7.99: yelp.com/biz_photos/penn… Completely random thought: "Kiss mah grits!" Do you remember Alice, Flo, and Mel's Diner? Ok most of you don't. Penny Ann's Cafe totally reminds me of Mel's Diner. I loved watching that show. Penny, you and the cooks and servers rocked it. Glad I found you on yelp. Thanks for the $5 off $15 with yelp check-in!

Give yourself plenty of time and don't be in a hurry when you come. You're likely to meet a wait and they take the time to really make your food. And be ready to get your belly full. The food is great. Portions are huge and price is reasonable. And get the scone. To die for!

I love this place for what it is: a fun diner/cafe! Ive had my share of great breakfast and this is up there! there isn't really anything negative I have to say about it other than the fact that parking can be a bit of a pain but well worth it, expect to wait (it's a small place), and its an adventure to go to the bathroom. Now all of the positive and why you should give it a try! The staff is so cool and friendly. They are helpful in everyday especially for how busy it is. The food is pretty dang tasty. Their pancakes are fluffy and delightful! the smothered breakfast burrito is huge and so stinker good! The chile verde really makes it taste 1000x better than it already does. The omelets are great because its not so much eggs as it is everything else (good egg to stuffing ratio). home fries taste pretty good; kind of like french fries. The scones are so delightful and once you add that honey butter, it'll melt in your mouth. Order pie for an appetizer! If you don't you'll be to full after breakfast to have some and you really don't want to miss out on some freakin delicious pie! Give this place a try, it's fun, friendly, delicious, and you'll leave feeling stuffed at a great price!

The heavenly hot cakes are the best I've EVER had in my life!!! They're so large and fluffy with the most delicious flavor. It's a must-have!!!! The Penny Pot (forget the exact name) with eggs, potatoes, bacon covered in gravy is the epitome of comfort food! Wow! Love Penny Ann's!!!!!!

Wow! I had no idea this place was even here and I work a few blocks away. It's a little hidden gem for the locals. It's on the west side of the street on Main, sitting at the bottom of an apartment complex. We went on a Friday morning around 9 and were sat right away. As time went on people ended up have a little of a wait. The cafe is cute and clean. Small mom and pops kind of place. Our server was extremely polite and knew the menu and specials well. All they serve is breakfast, my favorite meal! We will definitely be going back for more. Awesome gig

While visiting in Salt Lake, we stopped in a Penny Ann's Cafe for breakfast. My daughter loves the pancakes here and said we just had to try them. So we did and we where not disappointed. Yes, the place is pretty small and crowded. We were told it would be about an hour. To many, that is a bad sign, but to the informed, that means the place is probably pretty great. If people will wait an hour, the food has to be good. The weather was rainy, but we did not mind sitting out front. I was able to run in a get a cup of coffee. They had no problem putting it on our table tab even though we did not have a table. Very accommodating. The wait staff is very busy, but also very friendly. They are running around like crazy pushing food out as quickly as they can. Having a large group, we ordered just about every breakfast item they had. They advertise their famous 'Heavenly Hot Cakes'. Yep, they are pretty great. We had several with nothing more then just butter. Light and crispy. Great flavor. All the other breakfast items where also good. My wife had her usual Oatmeal and was very happy. We ordered a lot of food and ate all of it. We will definitely go back. These kinds of places are really fun. Fast paced, busy, happy and friendly patrons and wait staff.

Best pancake in town. We've been to both locations. The people are friendly, attentive, skilled and the food is all good. The cafes are always clean and charming. We come here EVERY time we are in town. We can't miss out.

My husband and I Love this place. We regularly go out to brunch and this is one of the best. Their pancakes, breakfast potatoes and biscuits and gravy are all fantastic. There may be a wait at brunch time but it is definitely worth it. My husband loves the omelettes as well if you are looking for an egg dish. They also sell pies which are absolutely heavenly. I have tried both the key lime and raspberry lemon. If only there were mimosas to go along with the rest of the food. If you think this already sounds great, the pricing should sell you. So cheap for such amazing food. Also the manager is the kindest person you will ever meet. Overall Penny Ann's has almost everything you could want in a brunch restaurant.

Our Waitress Kris was not good. When we asked her to check on our order after being here for 30mins she was bothered and then when she brought out order it was wrong. I ordered an egg white omelette that wasn't made with egg whites my mother order 2 types of cheeses she only received 1. When she asked Kris stated that the cheddar was a white cheese there. We also spoke to the manager Penny. We just wanted her to realize that her staff could have at least apologized instead of being rude. Penny did take care of the check after she argued that my egg whites weren't on the bill. I told her we had her taken it off and that cheddar is a yellow cheese and also a added charge which is fine. But she order the build your own omelette with 2 cheeses and 3 other ingredients. Penny also stated that "we are not fast food" I know that but also having worked in a restaurant I know how long it takes to cook orders please don't insult my intelligence. It's not always about taking care of the bill. But have the employees handle the issues. Manners and politeness can go a lot further in most cases. I will admit by the end of the meal I was probably a little rude and on the defensive side. Heard good things about this place to bad our experience was such an awful one. Won't be back.

Having read all the reviews early one morning I decided that having the "Big Breakfast" was a great way to try a bunch of the things this place offered. The standout for me were the potatoes - they were kind of like mini "roast potatoes" if you have ever had those and were great. Everything else was tasty, I would say that the pancakes had a great flavor and were not heavy or stodgy. Service was great and would for sure stop here again if I needed brekky in the SLC area.

After being told Penny Ann's café is one place you just have to try, and then after reading the multitude of just amazing reviews clearly a visit was in order. My biggest fear was it would not live up to the hype. So here it is - color me converted, I get it, I'm convinced, the hype is warranted and so it gives me pleasure to give Penny Ann's a well earned 5 star review! Hopefully that is enough to convince others to come and try this place. If you are really lucky it will also spare you from reading the rest of my review ;) This place reminds me of European Cafés, it's quaint and rather compact - and I mean both in overall size and the density of the seating, and while sometimes I find that a little uncomfortable these days the friendly service provided by this wonderful family owned business makes you feel straight at home. The food speaks for itself, there is something here for everyone and I'm sure anyone going here will soon find their personal favorite. Just to throw out a couple of favorites of me and the wife, on the specialities part of the menu are Pot of gold and Penny Pot Potatoes. These are both delectable. These (and most things) also come with the famous Heavenly Hot Cakes and by the power vested in my ability to type reviews let me say they live up to that name. I swear after eating them I die and live in the afterlife for about 4 hours. It gives one a real sense of hope for the future of life kind! Service here is great in all aspects and they do well handling what is a very busy and tricky to navigate environment. As well as your main server you will also find a barrage of people keeping you constantly topped up on coffee and water and checking how things are. So there it is. Stop reading now, step into the car, and start driving to Penny Ann's!

Happy Pi Day! Enjoyed the peanut butter chocolate pie which was delicious. Service is good. Expect a wait unless you are very early or very late. The patio is open for outdoor dining now! Best breakfast place in town!

Here are some things you should know about Penny Ann's Cafe. PAC has a very casual atmosphere. Kind of has a dumpy, hole in the wall feeling and isn't necessarily spacious. Nonetheless, the food is the real draw here. Service could be better, but was decent enough. I'm not really one to get up in arms over bad service, especially because it was the weekend breakfast rush. I had the chili verde skillet which was both good and bad. The presentation was pretty thrown together looking, and some parts of the dish definitely were cold. While the chili verde was passable, the potatoes were decidedly the highlight. PERFECTLY cooked. Enough crunch, but not doused in grease. Typically, based on the above I'd give Penny Ann's a 3 star average, however, the "heavenly hot cakes" gave a much needed boost. They were just the right amount of overcooked, light and complimented well by the maple syrup. All in all, I'd probably recommend the hot cakes or any variety of pancakes based on what I experienced with the chili verde. Potatoes, coffee and bacon definitely helped in increasing the rating. Between the okay seating arrangement, mostly hit but a little miss food, and the very affordable prices, Penny Ann's could easily win a place on my breakfast circuit.

07/21/2015. Given 4-5 waitresses: no service in 10 minutes!!!!!!; had to ask for a menu( had to ask to place an order; and sugar missing at table!! Very prompt in giving me the bill, though! Food was good; however would never go back.

Crazy long wait Run down place but the breakfasts are pretty good. Worth the wait. But the older waitress (black glasses, dark brown hair) looked very annoyed by the customers standing waiting for a table- it's raining so no choice The pancakes are really good, but don't pay for the pie. You can get a free slice of you text PIE to a number shown on each table I ordered the buttermilk pie. Sadly I was insanely disappointed. The pie tasted refrigerated But it was free. Wonder why? :)

Super bummed about our experience last Saturday morning. We were excited for the good food Penny Ann's does have. We arrived and were quoted 20 minutes for an outside table and given a buzzer. Sure enough an outside table for two opens up around 25 minutes later so we stood up ready to be seated, since we were there long before every other waiting customer. Then they buzz the couple who had just walked up 5 minutes ago with a dog to sit there. I walked in and asked why the new couple was seated before us and she tried to tell me 2 times that she called us 3 times and buzzed us. We were waiting 20 feet from the door the whole time and we were never called or buzzed. So I told her both times, "you did not call us or buzz us" and finally asked, "is that what you're sticking with?" She said yeah so I handed the buzzer back and we left. We don't mind waiting and we don't mind other larger groups that got there after us going before us so our party of 2 doesn't take up a table for 6 but to tell me you called me and buzzed me when no names were ever called and our buzzer never went off... Sorry we have to pass. I waited for a solution to given and she just stared at me.

Personally, I am not very impressed, maybe with all the reviews, I was expecting more than what we had. The only dish I would recommend is the fluffy pancakes.

  • Bethany G.

I blame it on my high expectations, of reading many many other reviews of this place and seeing it on list after list of must-eat places in Salt Lake. Judging by it's popularity, I assumed Penny Ann's would be busy on a Saturday morning so I showed up a little early to get our names in. Unfortunately it wasn't early enough, as I didn't understand the system of checking in and the woman walking around collecting names wasn't exactly organized in her system of walking around finding people that looked new and asking for their names. I ended up standing there for at least five minutes before she discovered me alone by the door looking around wondering what was going on. It was crammed right by the two doors and people were standing shoulder to shoulder, hovering over the poor patrons that were seated right next to the waiting area. I quickly prayed that I would not be seated there. How uncomfortable! So to avoid the awkwardness and heat of the body to body situation in the ten foot space, I stepped outside to wait for my companion in the cold. After what seemed like double the "Twenty minute wait" we were let in and pointed to a dirty table in the booth section and I said my thank yous for being seated in the most comfortable area. But if only the service had been more comfortable. Thankfully we had looked at the menu online before arriving because our waitress arrived a quick minute after we had been given our menus and expected us to be ready. So we gave her our orders and hoped that there wasn't anything more eye-catching on the menus we were given. Thanks to my lovely companion, the time in waiting for our food went by quick enough and soon our plates were sitting in front of us without so much as a "Can I get you anything else?" I had the Pot of Gold with a side of pancakes and she had the pancake topped with bananas and caramel syrup and a side of scrambled eggs. Considering our experience thus far, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed my plates of vegetables and potatoes topped with fried eggs and country gravy. The sausage in the gravy was absolutely delectable, soaking in the salty creamy goodness and bursting in my mouth. The eggs were a nice surprise hidden under the gravy and were cooked very well. I couldn't stop eating mine! But when it came time to start in on my pancakes, there was no syrup to be found. I had noticed earlier that a waiter asked for a syrup bottle off of someone elses table to give to a different customer so I assumed they were short on bottles (at a breakfast place famous for pancakes) and kept an eye out for my waitress to ask her for a bottle of my own. She never reappeared so I finally started in with just the butter on top. The pancakes were good! Not incredible like many others claim- I found nothing to be astounding or clever- but they were well cooked and on the larger side. I definitely felt mine could've used some syrup but I would've had to wait until my check came to ask as our waitress never returned. Without asking if we wanted dessert or anything else or bothering to see if these two women would want separate checks, our waitress suddenly appeared again, check in hand. I asked for a slice of pie to go and she hurriedly got that and the updated reciept for me. Though she had not been around our entire meal, I suddenly felt a sense of urgency, that her number one goal was for us to get out of that booth and turn it over to someone else. But because I hadn't seen my companion in about a year, we wanted to spend more time catching up (and let her finish her meal). And suddenly our waitress was by our side every few minutes, asking if we needed anything else or more water. Where was that attentive service when we needed it? She then brought me an unneeded bag for my leftovers and the hints trying to get us to leave were getting uncomfortable. Her tactics worked and we ended up leaving earlier than we would've liked, not wanting to feel rude for sitting at a table, eating food we'd paid for and chatting (how inconsiderate of us). Maybe it wasn't the high expectations. Maybe it's that I value good service as much as I value good food, and if they don't go hand in hand I'm disappointed. When I returned home and handed my husband the slice of pie, I couldn't help but list off the many things that had irked me over our meal. "But how was the food?" he asked. "Unfortunately it was great! I just don't know if I want to go back there for it," I said as I sunk my fork into a delicious piece of coconut cream pie that I wished I had bought a whole pan of. Now if I ever want that pie again, I'll have to brave the tiny waiting area and rude and inattentive staff to get it.

I consider this place to be a lot better than your typical greasy spoon which might explain why it's packed during peak hours. On a fairly busy Saturday morning, they were able to seat our party of 6 right away but that's only because we beat the rush so I would not recommend this place for large parties. Also, the A/C was broken when we went so it was pretty miserable on a hot summer morning. Nevertheless, their "Heavenly Hot Cakes" are affordable and well worth the wait. All their meals seem to come with hearty-food-coma-inducing portions so consider yourself warned.

Me and my wife are traveling in salt lake city, we were looking for a good inexpensive place for breakfast. We decided to come here and the service was amazing, food was great, we had the veggie omelet and the breakfast bowl. Both of them were delicious. My only regret is that we were to full to try the pies which sound like they are heavenly good

Great service. Great coffee. The portions are huge.. Quality AND quantity. Will definitely be back soon. The Reuben was one of the best I've had in Utah. The pot of gold is awesome! Eggs, bacon, sausage, onions, mushrooms, peppers and cheese smothered in sausage gravy. It was all gravy!

The corn beef hash tasted like it came from a dented can found in the discount section of the local super market. I do not recommend PAC. The portions are small and the service was sub par.

I am actually surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews of Penny Ann's based on my experience today. I've had this place bookmarked for some time now, and after flying back into town this morning we were craving a good breakfast. We luckily snagged a table right away, but it was packed and people were waiting. The service here was wonderful. I'm usually just neutral about most of the service I receive, but here it was a standout. The downside for me was in the execution and presentation of our food. The menu looked great and had an amazing selection of breakfast items, and I wanted a little of everything so I ordered the big breakfast. My hands-down favorite thing here is the hot cakes. They are PERFECT. I would come back just for those, and I don't even normally like pancakes. My bacon, however, looked like it had been excavated from Pompeii--what I refer to as bacon powder--because as soon as you touch it it disintegrates. Eggs were nicely cooked and the home fries were pretty good and very crispy though quite dry. My husband ordered a chile verde breakfast plate, and he didn't love it. It looked like it had been thrown on the plate by a lunch lady, which wasn't a great way to start. The interior here is not very inviting, which isn't a huge deal but worth noting. It's tiny and not really decorated, but it's a diner so take that for what it's worth. There's also nowhere for the waiting people to stand or sit, so they end up practically looking over your shoulder as you try to eat. I want to give this place another shot- and I will probably just order an endless pile of those hot cakes.

I recalled Pho Tay Ho being in this location many years ago before they moved into their current location. I am glad another establishment of the same caliber moved in, still got that mom and pop feeling, except it is for a different cuisine now. So far, I only had their pies on multiple occasions, and they had been absolutely delicious every time. They also serve breakfast and lunch, and I really need to get there for breakfast sometime. Until next time, Penny Ann.

This is one of my favorite breakfast places in Salt Lake City! Whether you live here or visiting you have to try this place!!! They have great food, NOT greasy, I don't like greasy, and it tastes so good. I mainly eat clean during the week, but every now and then I want the traditional American breakfast! I never feel bad or uncomfortable when I eat at this place. I really recommend their big breakfast (the vegetarian version) because I'm not big on meat. I also recommend you try their hot cakes, and their breakfast burrito, the vegetarian version. My bff often orders the corned beef omelet dish and she loves it!! Try this place out, you'll dig it!!

  • Jackson J.

The adjective "Heavenly" in front of their hot cakes is no misrepresentation. They are absolutely incredible. The corned beef hash is also pretty impressive. For the money, this is hands down the best breakfast joint in SLC. It's kind of a hole in the wall, but I find the unassuming atmosphere appealing.

Well we final waited the 20 minutes to eat here on a Sunday morning and it was great I had the hash with 2 poached eggs and the hash tasted very fresh and you can tell it was the good hash it actually tasted like hash not ham that some places try to slip by you. My only complaint would be the portion size of my hash I thought it should have been a little bigger. My brother had the breakfast burrito and he said it was great better than the last few places we have been too in fact he went back the next day and had the POT OF GOLD and he said that was amazing we will be back! I have to try a pancake next time because they looked great as we watched them coming out if the kitchen one after another.

Penny Ann's blew me away! It was amazing and their hot cakes sure do impress. I never know what to expect for typical cafe food, because let's be honest, there are plenty of great places around SLC. So it's hard to make places stand out entirely in my mind. But their food is what makes them stand out. All-around comfort food that is done so well you can't complain. I ordered the Utah Omelet and it was terrific. But my girlfriend ordered the real star of both meals: the quiche of the day- chicken, spinach and blue cheese. It was perfect and now I'm impressed forever. Seriously though! Great place.

So here we go.... First of all I'm not quite sure what all the hype is about? Perhaps, I just came at a bad time. It was 2:00 pm when I arrived and thankful there wasn't much of a crowd. With that being said you would think they would have time to run a sweeper. I ordered a garlic burger, kids cheeseburger and hot dog. It took about 20 mins before our food was ready. I was really nervous if I wanted to continue with our order when I noticed the chef was on his dirty cell phone while preparing the food (have pictures to prove it.) Anyways we finally ate and the best thing was the fry sauce. The waitress was really nice, but extremely distracted with playing with a toddler. Every time she would come to check on us or bring us something she would make a quick stop to play with the kid first. I love kids, but theres a time and place for everything. With the reviews being so high, I just may give it another chance... But if I do, next time I'm doing breakfast only and I may try a slice if pie. :-)

The food was fantastic! Unfortunately our meal was ruined by our server who decided to keep our seven dollars change as a tip. The principle and disrespect left a sour end to our yummy meal!

The food was okay- nothing amazing. The pancakes were probably the best thing. My boyfriend and I were not impressed with the bacon stuffed waffles or the potato creations. Even worse was the SERVICE. The waitress barely paused to give us what we wanted and seemed annoyed every time she came to the table. When I asked for the bathroom key, she said someone must have it and never checked into it again. She didn't check to see if we had cutlery and another waitress took care of that. Horrible service, made me never want to come again.

A quaint little cafe, it has a very inviting atmosphere and the service was satisfactory. Really good prices for the amount of food served. I got the fruit and yogurt parfait which was huge, beautiful and filled with yogurt, strawberries, blueberries and granola (although I wish it would have been real granola rather than a crushed nature valley granola bar) I also got a side of French toast, it was very yummy and had the perfect amount of cinnamon. The pancakes are also fantastic, rather than being super fluffy and somewhat full of air they were thick and rich (debatably better than the park cafe's pancakes) overall it's such a cute and yummy breakfast spot and I would recommend it!

Delicious food. Heaping portions of hot breakfast delights. The eggs are good, the pancakes are good, the potatoes are good, pie is good...everything's good! Stop being so good, Penny Ann! Let's see, what's not good...the wait is usually kinda long and the tables are cramped, but the food is worth it.

Walked into a tiny cafe which did not appear to be very busy, although the 6+ staff appeared very rushed. Apparently it was seat yourself, but very confusing because there was no sign. Multiple parties were confused. Our party of three ordered chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy, and a waffle. The chicken fried steak came out 30 before the other meals. There was an issue with the waffle maker that had several employees in a huff. It seemed they forgot about our biscuits and gravy. When the waffle finally arrived, the waitress apologized and said it had been taken off the bill. All of the food was overly greasy and not tasty. I tried to use a 20% off from Yelp, but they refused it because they had previously discounted the waffle - the waffle that had been discounted due to their equipment malfunction. The waitress made it seem like we were already getting superior service. Overall, the food was gross and not cooked well. The service was mediocre at best. The bathroom was disgusting. This place should really just close their doors.

Biscuits.... Biscuits and gravy.... Oh my! So ever since Carmack's burnt to the ground fifteen some-odd years ago I've been looking for that breakfast joint that has everything a breakfast spot should have & Penny Ann's is about as close as you can get. Killer pancakes, super biscuits and gravy, yummy deep fried breakfast potatoes, and all the standards a breakfast joint should have. Of course I'm rating this off one visit, but everything we had was great. I wish the place was a little cleaner and they had there own bathroom, but these can be overlooked if the food is of a certain standard and I must say it was about as close as you can get to Carmack's. It's not Carmack's, but it's in the same league. If I'm in SLC and I want breakfast this will be my stop (yes, even over the highly rated Park Cafe), if I head north I will still go to Sill's every time.... But Penny Ann's is a place I will visit at least a few times a month.

You can't really beat Penny Ann's for an excellent breakfast or brunch. You can always count on great coffee, ridiculously good pancakes, and perfectly cooked potatoes and eggs. The wait is consistently long so try to get there before 10:00am if it's a weekend. Portions are huge so it's easy to split a meal and get out of there for under $20.

This place is an amazingly good deal. The food is simple but good. I've been a couple of times for breakfast and I'm planning on visiting for lunch. The only downside is the wait. It's a small place and it always seemed to be packed.

Delicious! Awesome portion sizes. The pancakes are amazing but so is everything else. The staff is great. Love this place!

All I can say is... OMG!!!! Their pancakes are HUGE and sooo freakin' good. I have been their twice now and I can't image going to any place else for pancakes. They are that good. My friend had one of their omelettes, which of course I took the liberty to try a piece. I was very impressed. The omelette was very soft and fluffy, rich in flavour. This place is easy to miss cause its connect to an apartment building but don't let that fool you. The staff were all very friendly and they managed the crowd very well. Both times I went I had to wait about 10 mins before I could get seated. The restaurant itself is small so there isn't too many table and having a small crowd of people waiting outside is a common sight. Just writing this review makes me crave another go at PAC!! If you haven't gone, GO!

Had the breakfast nachos, which are basically a crunchy chilaquiles and they come with two heavenly pancakes, and it was sooo goood! Our server Cindy was one of the nicest and best servers ever!

Fantastic pancakes, fluffy and filling, served with some honey butter and syrup - super delicious. The scones are amazing, also light and fluffy, crispy and tasty, also served with the honey butter. I again got their breakfast nachos - served with light, flaky and crispy pastry type chips, two eggs cooked to your liking (mine are always over easy), smothered with chili verde. Topped with finely shredded cheddar cheese and sour cream, this breakfast is incredible. Coffee is good, friendly and helpful wait staff, you usually have to wait a few minutes to get a table, but that's yet another sign of a great local spot. Also - their pot potatoes are great, the breakfast burrito is smothered in the chili verde and amazing, biscuits and gravy are classic and on point and the poached eggs are done well.

Super good pancakes and coffee. Everything else we had was good, but nothing special. The place is always packed, no matter what time you go, so expect a wait. Overall, a good breakfast/brunch spot, but not one of my favorites.

This place is cute & good as far as dinners go. It's really small & difficult to get a table though. The food is also really greasy...though sometimes that's what I want :-)

Think Grandma's pancakes. Or at least my Grandma's pancakes. Those buttery discs of fluffy delight my dad's mom makes so well. It's one of my happy thoughts, Peter Pan. And, those are the pancakes here at Penny Ann's. I've had them twice, and both times they were delicious (though my first experience...my perception _may_ have been slightly chemically altered ;-) ) I've been twice, both times on Sunday for breakfast/brunch. It's brunch if it's at 1 PM, right? And it's ALWAYS hopping. It's a tiny little place on the first floor of the Terrace Apartments Building that feels very much like a dinner, but also an appendage to the apartment building. The staff have been great. They seem to be very well trained to deal with the constant bustle of this little place and meet the needs of hungry patrons. I've seen nothing but smiles and pixie dust here. Cost is also a great draw. Easily, you can get a very filling, delicious meal, for less than $10. You might even make it an even $10 with tax AND tip, depending on what you decide to purchase. It's within walking distance (depending on the person) from the 21st South TRAX station (Central Pointe), and if you're visiting Salt Lake for your first time, or are on your way to Neverland, well, just stop on by.

Simple and deliciously fresh at a reasonable price. I had the spinach salad and the Reuben sandwich. It was probably the best Reuben I've had to date. The lemon raspberry cream pie was uniquely yummy. The service was also excellent, our waitress was courteous without being over eager. I will be coming back for my free pie!

Not impressed. Greasy and not sure what all the hype is about the pancakes. Comparable to Dennys or Village Inn.

I get the impression from reading lots of PAC reviews that the meat dishes here are wonderful. As a diabetic vegetarian, my breakfast menu choices were limited at Penny Ann's (though, obviously, I often have that problem when I eat out). I had one of their veggie omelettes ... ordered it moist with extra pepper jack cheese. It came somewhat dry with very little cheese (definitely not extra). Also, the coffee was very watery and weak (disappointing). The place was very busy, but I was lucky not to have to wait in a long line. The waitresses were very friendly and came by my table frequently to fill up my coffee mug, so I'm giving Penny Ann's an extra star for good service!

I've been here for both breakfast and lunch and I prefer the breakfast more, those pancakes though best I've ever had!!!! Pot of gold is awesome as well. The staff are so nice and friendly.

Where have you been all my life?! Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and now Penny Ann's is my favorite place to eat it! This unassuming-looking diner sends food out of the kitchen that easily rivals 5-star restaurants. I mean it. Forget fancy upscale joints. I want to dine at Penny Ann's for my birthday! And my anniversary. And any other occasion that calls for celebration. Between my husband, and me; we've tried: The hot cakes. Divine. Dense (in a good way). Indescribable. The PAC BAM waffle. Maple-covered bacon pieces in the Belgium waffle batter. Enough said. Biscuits & Gravy. My husband said they're the best he's ever had! The sour cream, in the biscuit batter kicks it up a notch. The chile verde skillet. Cheese, potatoes, meat, eggs, chile verde! If you can manage to get all of the fixins' together; it's like a taste of heaven on a fork! And, oh my, pie! Nothing is better than the coconut cream pie. Except for the fresh strawberry pie. The prices at Penny Ann's are downright affordable. Seriously, I've never had so much good to say about one dining establishment. It's perfection.

I ordered the Penny's pot potatoes (I thinks that's what it is called) and it was delicious! A bit on the cheesy side but that's just me. I also got a side of scones and it was so good! Best scone I've have. It was worth the wait.

Came out here for an event and a friend told me this place was good. I'm from LA, so I've had a lot of really good breakfast cafés I've been to. So, I didn't really have THAT high of expectations. I ended up getting the Pot of God with the pancakes. The pancakes are sour cream based and ridiculously good. The Pot of Gold is INSANE. It was huge and soooooo good. Plus, the prices are really reasonable. I feel sad that I'm not out here longer or I'd be coming more. Next time I'm out this way, though, I WILL be back.

Penny Ann's is the kind of cafe I could eat at every day. I had the Reuben and I could not have been more pleased. The sandwich had generous portions of meat, a great balance between meat and sauerkraut and perfectly grilled marble rye bread. I ordered the 50/50 fries and both were crispy and delicious, just like fries should be. We also had the fried mozzarella sticks, which Penny Ann's serves with a side of grape jelly. Trust me, try this next time you eat here.

  • Nate S.

There may be another pie-based star in the future. I hear good things about the pie. If you're just in it for the breakfast, Penny Ann's is decent. Their pancakes are outstanding, their home fries are basically french fries (not that there's anything wrong with that), their coffee and sausage gravy are fair, and their scrambled eggs were overcooked this time. Their friendliness is probably unmatched.

Delightful! We decided to eat here before getting back on the road to Idaho. Based on past yelp reviews, I ordered the pork chili verde skillet and husband ordered the pot of gold, each with heavenly cakes. Both were delicious! The pancakes were smooth and had a great flavor and the chili verde tasted more authentic than the popular Mexican joint we had tried the day before. The pot of gold was just as good! My husband said he enjoyed PAC more than The Park Cafe, we would eat here again! My only complaint is how small and disorganized the waiting area is. Being out-of-towners, we didn't know you had to swerve through the crowded front door to go up to the counter and put your name on a waiting list. A few other locals came in after and got put ahead of us because they were familiar with the restaurant.

This place was OK, not amazing like others claim to be. Ordered the panckaes, which was alright. Ordered a side of bacon and I was soo disappointed. They were dry and hard. This confused me, because I thought you can never go wrong with cooking bacon. But I was wrong. The prices were decent.

A restaurant every other restaurant should base itself off of. Reasonable prices, great service, excellent food!!! Pot of gold is absolutely fantastic, corned beef hash may be the best I ever had. Pancakes and omelets are excellent as well!! So is the coffee - absolutely no complaints!!

If you have no taste buds, go here! I had some good expectations based on all the reviews. But, NOTHING was good at all. We went for lunch and will never go back again. FOOD: My fiancé had the ChickenFettuccini Alfredo, the chicken was old and tough. The sauce was what you'd get if you made it yourself from a packet. I had the Eggplant Parmigiana w/ Spaghetti. Breading was non existent, greasy and of course the sauce was jar sauce. SERVICE: How would you like your server to tell you that if you need a minute to decide, that's fine she wanted to go to the restroom really bad?...and when she came back, to say "oh wow, I'm 100lbs lighter!" And when she can't get her order right to say, " I think I left my brains in the bathroom".

  • Derek W.

I have to add to my previous reviews and tell you about the amazing St Patricks Day corned beef, potatoes, carrots, cabbage and pie. This is probably the best corned beef meal I have ever had. The beef was lean and trimmed and what made the meal was the mustard sauce covering the corned beef. I could drink this stuff, so good. The fact that it was only $9.99 with pie makes it the deal of the year. Well done Penny Ann's Cafe.

I am a picky pancake person and theirs are incredible. I've only been midweek so can't speak to the weekend staff/crowd, but the waitresses are very friendly and accommodating. The pie is awesome; I would recommend the banana cream.

  • Rajeev M.

what I ordered My USC omelette (bacon mushroom and cheddar) was okay, they do not skimp on the cheese or bacon which is nice and the potatoes were nice and crisp. I did try my friends pot of gold (home fried potatoes mixed with ham, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, topped with cheddar cheese, two eggs*, smothered in sausage gravy) and that was delicious. The sausage gravy really brought the amalgam of breakfast food together. I would order this on another occasion but only if i was starving or hung over. I regret not ordering a full stack of pancakes because the rumors about Penny Ann's Heavenly Hotcakes is TRUE! They were fluffy and had that nice crust from being cooked in butter on the griddle. Cut to the Chase: 3.5 Star food but additional .5 stars for the check in deal= 4 Stars Good: Yelp Check in Discount/Solid Brunch (Great Pancakes) Bad: Long Wait/Had to eat outside on the patio and it started raining

Yum this is my new favorite diner for breakfast/ lunch! The service was amazing the food was hot and delicious and the pie was devilishly delicious! Their breakfast is great. Today I went for lunch and had a Philly cheese steak with provolone and cheese whiz (he said that is the real way of doing it) and it was amazing! Lots of meat and veggies and cheese stretching from my teeth to the sandwich. I really didn't want pie but then it was out in front of me and it was the BEST pie I have ever eaten! It was light and silky and amazing! We ended up eating the whole thing. A++++++

This cafe is the epitome of a traditional American cafe/diner; small, quaint, friendly servers, and comfort food for any pallet. Breakfast at Penny Anne's is not only scrumptious but filling. Omelettes come out piping hot with a mound of fillings-the potatoes and pancake 'sides' are really too much. Their pancakes...well lets just say they might just persuade Celiacs to finish off more than a short stack. And they take their heavenly pancakes from a ten to an eleven every Autumn by adding pumpkin. Lets just say that PAC does it right and shames all other inferior pumpkin pancakes. They can get pretty busy and the kitchen gets backed up, so you might encounter a bit of a wait after you get seated. 20 minutes from ordering has been my longest wait thus far. Don't forget to save room for pie!

  • Rachelle B.

I live a good half hour away, but find any excuse I can to go to breakfast at PAC. Let's start with the "heavenly hot cakes". I'm pretty sure they have those in the celestial kingdom. They come as an option as a side with almost anything, and if you choose a different option, well, you kind of deserve to miss out. Egg dishes are delish. Further, I'm a tried and true hash browns over home fries lover, but I'm pretty sure Penny Ann puts crack in her potatoes, because I just can't get enough. Also, get a slice of pie-any pie-to go. Even if you don't like pie (guilty), you'll love the pie.

Who knows how they do it -- perhaps there are resident cherubim and seraphim floating around the spice rack in the kitchen, but the cooks really do sprinkle a little celestial magic into each Heavenly Hotcake. Penny Ann's is a weird little café on the ground floor of a sketchy little apartment complex in a dodgy little part of Salt Lake City. You'd think the place would be deserted -- and yet, these days, you're lucky if you can get a table within 20 minutes. What makes Penny Ann's so popular? Three things: Certainly the food. It's down-home, no-frills diner fare made from real ingredients by actual humans. Those of a certain age may remember how Aunt Bea used to cook delicious meals for Mayberry jail inmates on The Andy Griffith Show? And perhaps how she might have put a little extra care into preparing meals for people she liked? Well, if you've ever wondered what Aunt Bea's breakfast would taste like if she were cooking for Otis the town drunk, and Bea and Otis were also having a secret affair behind Sheriff Andy's back, and Bea really, really loved Otis, well then check out Penny Ann's "Pot of Gold" ($8.99). That's a breakfast so incredible it would have inspired Otis to embark on an entirely new and successful life path. Also, the people. We've developed friendships with Penny Ann's wait staff that make us feel as though we'd be welcome at family weddings. Of course, we're not stalkers, but they're just lovely people. At one point, seeing that we had brought our 86-year-old mobility-impaired mother with us, the owner came out, gave us his card, and said next time call ahead and he'd move his car so we could park in his VIP space out back, in order for her to have an easier time hobbling in with her walker. So warm, loving and generous! Finally, the location. It's such a bizarre, unexpected spot that discovering it seems like a personal accomplishment somehow. Knowing about Penny Ann's makes you feel 150 percent hipper somehow, because to drive by the place you'd never think to actually stop by. You probably heard about it from a friend who knows about those kinds of things. Or you read about it in City Weekly. But it's definitely not mainstream. Which is why I'm slightly distressed that their new location is not going to be downtown -- it's in Draper. Oh sure, they'll love it in Draper. But will they really appreciate it? I mean appreciate it the way we in Salt Lake City appreciate it? I'm hoping they'll soon find a way to expand downtown. But that's just because I'm greedy for some more of those Heavenly Hotcakes.

This is a cute little spot on Main, right next to some apartment buildings. We got here at 9 am on Sunday and found a table right away. The server was super friendly and helpful and made the experience all that more enjoyable. I had the Stanford omelet and it was cooked perfectly! Although this is probably the ONLY time I'll ever like anything from Stanford, it was the best sounding vegetarian option to me. It was stuffed full of filling, no shortage here! The pancakes and hash browns are also VERY tasty! I took a slice of their peanut butter chocolate pie home and follows suit with their meal, very tasty pie! You definitely won't leave here hungry so bring your appetite. I think I'll come back here to try what they offer for lunch. I love that this is a family owned business. They definitely take pride in their food and service, everyone helps out all of the tables. I'll be back here for sure to try their other menu offerings.
